Ju had always wondered what it would be like to fly. She had never wondered hard enough to pursue it as a career choice, but she felt that no intelligent being ever spent their entire life without at least once wondering how it felt. Ju had always enjoyed fixing things, though, and that was where she had decided to pursue her passions and build her interests. Luckily, they had allowed her to come here, to the Artemis, to Starfleet even, and build a career.
“Flying, I imagine, is quite thrilling,” Ju admitted.
Lucy admitted that it was a family event that her mother nurtured, which began her love of rocks and stones. Ju couldn’t help but smile; she remembered spending a lot of time with her brothers and her Halmoni fondly and could easily remember them walking through various parts of Korea. Halmoni worked hard for them, but she tried to take them on small trips when she could. Ju’s favorite place was the beach; coming from the city, being able to see the large stretches of water and sand everywhere was always breathtaking.
Lucy turned the question back on Ju, and the young Engineer smiled. “I got into Engineering when my Halmoni, my grandmother, needed things fixed around the house. My brothers were usually busy either studying or working, and I was too young. So I began to look into how to fix things, how to make them better, how to replicate the parts I needed. I began to really take pride in my Halmoni coming home, and things were fixed. Then, it became fun; I began to look for challenges to see if I could fix something harder or more delicate. It just kept ramping up from there until I ended up applying to the Academy.”
Ju still remembered how proud her Halmoni was when she got her first acceptance letter. She also remembered how her Halmoni would tell all her neighbors about how smart her grandchildren were. How Ju could fix anything, how the boys were pursuing their own interests, how she would never have to worry. Halmoni had raised them well. Ju also remembered being sent out to help fix problems at neighbors' homes, but it didn’t bother her. They almost never paid in money, but they would pay in food or favors. There was a lot of trading that went on in their small little neighborhood.
“Okay, let’s do a toast!” Ju filled up her glass and held it up towards the center of the table in the air. “To new friends, coworkers, and to exciting new lives!” She paused, allowing everyone else to say what they wanted to add, if they did, before she brought her glass to meet with everyone’s own.
