Chief Science Officer’s Log, Stardate 242608.06

Our mission began when sensors picked up a small shift that was adrift in space and losing power quickly. Loosely translated, we came to call the ship Broken Arrow, though we would soon learn that translation between our worlds and theirs would be far from direct. Before we stepped foot on board the ship,we learned that there were twelve individuals, all cryogenically preserved, and no other life signs on board. It didn’t take long to figure out that if we did not somehow repair their ship or bring them aboard, that they would perish. We also learned that the origin  of the shuttle was Icarus III, and by all records, the species seemed to have died out over a millenia ago.

The Away Team consisted of myself, Dr. O’Fee, Lieutenant Gath, and two midshipmen - Science Officer Cortez, and Engineering Officer A’kilees. The initial obstacles that we had to overcome were that we needed to widen the hatch on the alien ship to fit the cryogenic chambers through the opening in order to load them onto our shuttle; and, their power supply was almost completely incompatible with ours, and it took significant modifications in order for us to maintain power to the chambers.

However, widening the hole started off as a dangerous endeavor when we learned too late that using our phaser technology to cut through the hull created an explosive effect due to the honeycomb polymer used in between the plating. Lieutenant Gat was able to successfully brute force our way through it by using a sort of pick axe to cut through the material. But this all became moot. Systems on board the Broken Arrow began to overload, and the Captain had to make the call to use pattern enhancers to transport all of us out - Away Team, and cryo chambers, before everything was lost. Other than a data module that Lieutenant Gath managed to retrieve, there was nothing left of the ship to study - or to give back to the aliens that we rescued.

The data module turned out to be an absolute treasure trove. Stellar maps from over a millenia, accounting for gravitational shifts, and outlining their origin and destination. Midshipmen A’Kilees and Cortez were able to use a combination of mathematics and musical theory to decipher a language algorithm to feed into the Universal Translator, where it had previously been unable to translate - or even determine if there was a language present in the module. Medical and engineering were able to keep the pods functional, and several of us witnessed Commander Ameen make First Contact with the individual that was revived from stasis.

First Contact was peaceful, and the Captain was able to  express our intent to help right away. There were concerns, because it had been determined that the twelve were Apex predators, designed to exterminate any threat. We also learned that the module that Lieutenant Gath salvaged contained the information - the genetic seed - that the twelve individuals will need to restart their civilization.

Despite our numerous successes, and the relationship that M-Captain Ameen had built during First Contact, the mission was quickly taken over entirely by the Captains of the Templar and the Aberjonois. I’m not certain if their continued work will be classified, or if we will be allowed to follow the progress of our new friend and the resettlement plans. I certainly hope so. After everything that has happened - there is certainly scientific curiosity, but also an emotional investment.

This was also my first mission as Chief Science Officer - at least first mission in which the Science Department was heavily involved. I’m sure a performance evaluation will be forthcoming. My crew did well. I hope that I lived up to expectations as Chief.
