Mission Log, Stardate 202608.07
Chief of Security, Lt Gath
The ship detected an alien craft adrift and the decision was made to investigate and possibly render assistance. According to the data I reviewed, it turned out to be an ancient craft from a dead civilization and had been launched approximately 100,000 years ago. It was a relatively fragile craft and I would speculate that it was only luck that allowed it to survive as long as it did.
Life forms were detected inside, but they were in stasis, thus there was no communication possible. All systems appeared very primitive, though the cryogenics were still functional. A team was formed to attempt to explore further and I accompanied them. I had a shuttle standing by for emergency observation purposes as we had to manually attempt access. The internal structure was too cramped and damaged to allow us to beam in and there was difficulty maintaining sufficient sensor lock.
The Engineer on the team, A'Kilees, attempted to use a phaser with a cutting setting to gain entry through the hull, as the hatch was secured from the inside and all access functions were disabled. This resulted in a small detonation from the internal structure of the hull plating. There were no injuries and we abandoned the idea of using energy tools to gain access. I used a retractable hand axe to cut through the hull and A'Kilees used a prying tool to bend it away, allowing us to quickly and safely enter the craft. We soon discovered that our time was limited. The integrity of the craft was already in question, but some of the small debris around it began to impact it and our compromising the hull structure likely didn't help the ancient vehicle. What small amount of power had remained was already at a critical point and warning began to signal that several of the pods were beginning to shut down.
Transporter enhancers were deployed and in hopes of gathering some intelligence information to assist in our keeping the crew alive, I looked for any kind of possible data storage device that might hold logs or flight data. There was only one object that appeared to meet that criteria and I detached it in time for us to escape to our ship as the alien craft failed around us. The use of tractoring did manage to assist our lasting long enough to beam out, but also consigned the craft to certain doom as a result of the energy fields used.
All pods were connected to power through the creative methods employed by Engineering, managing to miraculously keep them in stasis while we worked on what to do next. Science and Medical began analysis of the pods and their occupants, as well as the data module I had salvaged. The module turned out to not only carry the information we needed, but was also the purpose of the ship's mission. Science was able to access it and devise a means of establishing communication when we eventually woke the leader of the group.
Scans of the creatures indicated they were engineered to be quite formidable and able to withstand extreme environments, including exposure to open vacuum. For initial encounter, I established a neutral environment on the holodeck that allowed an increased gravity area for the benefit of the creatures, duplicating their original home gravity. This was then augmented with various safety subroutines that would engage containment fields, hide a security detail from detection until needed and even an emergency transport sequence to beam the creature into open space, outside the ship, if needed. This was also duplicated for Sickbay environment if needed. Fortunately there was no need to use any of those measures and there were no altercations with the life forms.
All security detail members have been returned to normal duty schedules and given appropriate time compensation to adjust back to their respective duty schedules. It is worthy of comment that the only dangerous elements were the ship debris and reaction of the construction materials that endangered the crew at any time. It appears that the selected safety gear for EVA was sufficient to the task with no damage to the gear or crew reported. All EVA safety procedures were in place and also maintained crew safety, even under adverse conditions.
