The USS Zephyr has concluded with a rather unusual task while performing a series of surveys of outlying systems in uncharted space. While observing long range sensors, the crew had detected a large artificial object drifting in space nearly two hours from our position. Commander Ameen called all senior officers to report to the bridge in light of this unusual reading. The Zephyr was placed on yellow alert as we began to approach what appeared to be a small vessel floating alone in space, clearly with energy burns along its hull leaking frozen vapours into space named the Broken Arrow.

After an analysis of the Broken Arrow, the crew concluded that the vessel was from a previously unknown extinct pre-warp civilization originating from the planet Icarus III. Apart from the various points of damage that were detected, scans indicated that there were twelve life signs present still on board the vessel located in cryopods inside. Chief Engineer Keir 77 requested that I report to the bridge to help with the investigation. Upon my initial scans, the situation looked grim. Structural integrity was critical and was exposed to open space with no chance of transporter lock due to multiple factors. Commander Ameen posed the question to the bridge crew on how we should proceed. Many of the crew proposed their own plans to the commander and the floor soon became mine. My proposal involved a shuttle transport through the debris and a high risk spacewalk to cut into the vessel with phasers and set up pattern enhancers to improve transporter lock and transport all cryopods out. I also volunteered myself to be part of the away team if we chose this course of action as I felt it would be irresponsible to suggest such a potentially dangerous mission if I wasn’t willing to go myself.

Everyone of the crew finished their proposals, the Commander noted everyone who contributed and noted my volunteering to join the team as courageous. After another series of long range scans, Commander Ameen concluded that my proposal was to be our plan of action and that I was to join Keir 77 and a number of other members of the crew on the away mission. The operation didn’t go exactly as planned. Upon landing on the Broken Arrow, we attempted our first cuts with the phasers. The heat caused a reaction in the polymer sealant between the brittle alloy hull creating a sudden outgassing of pressurized vapor causing further structural degradation. The Zephyr crew managed to hold the ship together using the ship’s tractor beam but it only gave us a little time before the Broken Arrow collapsed in on itself. Lieutenant Gath managed to physically create a tear within the hull near the pods to which we could gain access inside and set up pattern emitters for the transporter. Investigating the area, we discovered the ship's black box and the twelve cryopods, each containing a large alien being. The majority of the pods were functioning properly but three had critical power levels and were at risk of failing, killing those inside them. Thankfully, with Midshipman Cortez’s bravery, he was able to provide a charge using a makeshift connection between the shuttlecraft and the pod connection port with a hyperspanner and was able to give the critical pods enough power to be transported safely to the Zephyr along with the rest of away team.

Arriving via transporter in Sickbay, the away team along with the medical team scrambled to get the situation under control. With the timely arrival of Commander Ameen, he quickly instructed me to power the now disconnected pods directly into the EPS unit above the surgical arch as it would provide enough power to all twelve pods now lying about. Without hesitation and with the assistance of a few of the medical personnel managed to connect the cryopods directly into the EPS conduit albeit with a minor injury due to my improvised method to expose the cable to hardwire them into the power grid. I was complimented for a job well done by both Lieutenant Gath and Commander Ameen for this action.

After being treated by Doctor O’Fee, programming a security subroutine request for her and performing a few engineering tasks around the ship to compensate for the increased power draw to Sickbay, I was ordered to report the Science Labs by Lieutenant Ra’an to assist her, Midshipman Cortez and Petty Officer Sh’Sjoress in the construction of a Faraday cage as a containment field to open the alien blackbox from the Broken Arrow. Along with the members of the science department and Ensign Singer we successfully created a functioning Faraday cage to which Ensign Singer and Lieutenant Ra’an entered to investigate and unlock the black box. With the black box now open, the task of discerning the alien language fell to Cortez and myself. Cortez attempted to use musical theory while I chose a phonetic isolation algorithm to decode the enigmatic dialect. With this combination of methods we were immediately able to configure the Universal Translator to detect and translate the language and compile the data now flowing into the ship’s computer.

The combination of the secure pods, the language accessible and the alien blackbox now known as the Genomic Ark unlocked, Commander Ameen and the rest of the crew were able to establish a successful first contact with the being known as the Apex Prime, one of the aliens we deemed to be of authority among the various members. Starfleet, knowing of our current situation, had sent two vessels to rendezvous with the Zephyr; the USS Templar and the USS Auberjonois to which all further responsibilities were given over too while the USS Zephyr will continue on it's previous survey mission.
