"T'Lari, I want your people ripping the guts out of every other probe we have and installing antimatter warheads and proximity sensors. If we get a chance, and judging by the closure vectors we will, I want to dump a minefield right in their path. That should even the odds a little more in our favour."
"Understood, Captain." It was just the sort of tactic Braggins was famous for. Devious and flashy. It might take the Cardassians by surprise, or it might end up blowing the Yeager into scrap. Either way it would be spectacular.
The Tactical Lieutenant reached under her console and pulled out a little-used communications earbud.
"T'Lari to Verrait. Captain's orders, priority one. Get as many people as you have over to the probe locker and start installing antimatter warheads and proximity sensors in every probe you can. Prioritize the Class 1 probes, but keep going until you run out of probes, time, or antimatter."
(PAUSE)
T'Lari struggled to keep her voice down. The Tellarite inclination to argument was the last thing she wanted to deal with right now, and it was testing her often fragile emotional control. "You heard me. As many people as you can spare, and then anyone you can't. Shanghai anyone nearby to start running the warheads. If your people are unsure of the procedure get Engineering to assist, but get it done."
(PAUSE)
"I don't care. Take them to the main shuttlebay if you have to and be ready to manually throw them through the magnetic field. We need a swarm and won't have time to carefully launch them."
(PAUSE)
"This discussion is over. You have your orders. Key the probes to arm from my station or the Captain's chair."
The young officer cut the link and uttered a rather scatological Romulan curse word before spending a moment to collect herself. For all his bluster and stubbornness, Verrait was a professional and would get the job done. He was a minor in Engineering and had an almost obsessive love of explosives. One of his hobbies was figuring out how Federation-standard weapons could be up-powered to the point that they would be considered war crimes. Probably why he was on this ship and not a more reputable vessel. If she knew him the Yeager was going to need refueling... assuming they survived this.
She turned to the Captain. "Antimatter is being installed, Captain. The probes will be able to be armed from your chair or Tactical."
The young Andorian Science officer addressed her from his nearby station. "Lieutenant, I am aware you're likely to be very busy, but any suggestions or insights would be appreciated."
She considered for a moment. Such things had been fairly common during the Dominion War. What was it... the Juno, a Miranda-class ship that had barely escaped destruction due to an oversight. Caught in a surprise attack, the ship had gone grey in an attempt to drift away from a Cardassian squadron but had still been detected. It had escaped only due to dumb luck, the presence of cloaked Klingon ships in the system that drew the enemy's full attention.
"Of course, Midshipman." Her Vulcan calm was back, at least on the surface. "Tertiary navigation sensors can be overlooked in grey mode and sometimes aren't shut down properly if a crew is rushed. Their power output is negligible, but can be just enough of a 'tell' to alert enemy vessels."
