T'Lari's calm and focus took over her demeanor, which Ris could definitely appreciate, especially at moments of heightened tensions.
"Of course, Midshipman." she replied to his query. "Tertiary navigation sensors can be overlooked in grey mode and sometimes aren't shut down properly if a crew is rushed. Their power output is negligible, but can be just enough of a 'tell' to alert enemy vessels."
"Very useful information, thank you." He nodded in acknowledgement even as he formed the words. Within moments, Chief Chertstone had also responded. In contrast to the Tactical officer's serenity, the human helmsman's demeanor was anything but calm. The antennae on top of his head moved slowly in a tight circle, one going clockwise, the other anticlockwise, as he attempted to assess his crewmate's emotional state.
“That's a bit hard to say. Grey mode kind of makes that impossible to determine. But if it were me. I'd have probably plotted a parabolic drift, away in the opposite direction to the Cardassians when we first detected them. They probably kept in our physical shadow as long as they could to mask any output they might have produced. Which they obviously didn't as we didn't detect them leaving. But at a guess...” He pointed to the port side of the vessel. “That way. Somewhere.”
Tapping into the very few basic command courses that were required at the Academy, he recalled a very engaging Bolian NCO. She has imparted to the class that officers freshly out of the Academy didn't know Targ feces from Sehlat feces, though her word choices were slightly more colorful, and that they needed to find an experienced NCO to latch on to so they can learn.
"Chief, I am very familiar with how the blood can sing like a choir in moments like this, but, every choir needs a good director for the song to make any sense. Imagine if there was an impressionable, young cadet recently graduated from the Academy on the bridge with you, and they were going to take their cues from you on how to react?" He allowed himself a slight, hopefully disarming smile, and his antenna relaxed to their neutral positions. "The best guess was what I was looking for, and the insights are also helpful, thank you."
With that, Ris turned his attention back to his console, refining the search of the Grey Mode emanations on file that primarily had tertiary sensor power leakage, as well as the EM indications of a slightly misfiring plasma conduit inductor.
