Riding a ship's "bow wave" was theoretically possible, but extraordinarily dangerous. It essentially required the ship to ride the energy field projected by the navigational deflector. The problem was, if the velocities changed even a little, the ship would be thrown off into an uncontrolled tumble, or the "pushing" ship would run right up the back of it.
