“Yes, ma’am. I think our best option is to identify a naturally occurring source of sensor interference in the sector and determine whether we can use it to our advantage. We don't necessarily need to make the ship invisible. We need to make it difficult for the Cardassians to distinguish us from the environment.”
He began sorting through the data, comparing subspace fluctuations, stellar radiation, electromagnetic interference, asteroid concentrations, and other anomalies. “If we can find an area where their sensors are already dealing with significant background interference, we may be able to use it as a sensor shadow. We could then modify our deflector emissions to match the surrounding conditions rather than trying to overpower their sensors.”
Sebastian paused as another set of readings appeared on the display.
“We should also examine their known sensor and communications frequencies. If we understand what they're looking for, we may be able to minimize the specific signatures they're most likely to detect. The same principle might work for our communications—hide our transmissions inside naturally occurring interference rather than broadcasting through it.”
He looked back toward her. “If we're successful, the Cardassians won't necessarily see anything. They may simply see something that doesn't warrant further investigation.”
A faint, almost tentative smile crossed his face.
“And if we can make them spend their time investigating something that isn't us, I would consider that a successful use of the available science.”
