Sebastian had been staring at the sensor display for several seconds, watching the proposed approach vector crawl across the tactical plot. The plan was sound in principle. The problem was that *space wasn't actually empty*. Even a ship that appeared to be doing absolutely nothing was still producing heat, electromagnetic leakage, life-support emissions, and a hundred other tiny signatures that a sufficiently attentive sensor operator could eventually notice.

He leaned forward, tapping a few controls on his console.

"Captain, I think we can make the silent-running approach considerably quieter." Sebastian glanced toward Morad, then back to the sensor display. "We shouldn't try to make the *Zephyr* invisible. We should make her look like something that doesn't matter."

He pulled up the deflector-control interface.

"The hull is going to radiate heat regardless of what we do. If we shut everything down completely, the temperature differential actually becomes more suspicious because the ship starts becoming an unusually cold object against the background. Instead, we use the deflector to manipulate the plasma and thermal emissions we're already producing."

Sebastian began outlining the concept on the tactical display. "We establish a very weak deflector envelope around the ship—not enough to register as an active deflector system, just enough to scatter our residual electromagnetic emissions and redirect waste heat along our flight vector. Basically, instead of broadcasting a nice, convenient thermal signature in every direction, we're smearing it across the background."

His finger moved to the projected asteroid field.

"And we don't make the mistake of maintaining a perfectly straight approach. That's another thing a computer could identify. Natural objects don't fly in perfectly controlled vectors. We can use the occasional tiny thruster pulse, timed with background radiation fluctuations or passing debris, to introduce microscopic course variations. Nothing large enough to look like maneuvering. Just enough to make our trajectory resemble a piece of debris that happens to be drifting in the right direction."

Sebastian paused, then smiled faintly.

"Then Keti's probes give us the second layer. We don't just send them toward the Cardassians. We scatter them across different vectors, with different apparent velocities and deliberately imperfect Bajoran signatures. If their sensors notice one, they'll have to decide whether it's a ship, debris, or some ancient Bajoran trick they thought they understood."

He looked toward Keti.

"And if they're still using occupation-era threat profiles, they're going to spend more time investigating something that looks familiar than something they don't recognize."

Sebastian turned back to Morad.

"So I'd recommend three layers: **thermal masking, passive drift, and controlled deception.** No active sensors. No communications. No sustained thruster burns. The deflector does the quiet work, while the probes create enough ambiguity that their computers can't easily isolate the *Zephyr* from the background."

He leaned back slightly.

"Basically, Captain, we don't need to become ghosts."

A small grin appeared.

"We just need to convince the Cardassians we're boring."

Sebastian looked at the tactical display again.

"Hopefully, it'll be enough to keep us from becoming the most interesting thing on their sensors."
