Holodeck 01 - Medical Cadet Khoren Ch'Talan
#2
== Physical Description ==
Name: Khoren Ch'Talan
Species: Andorian/Denobulan Hybrid
Gender: Male
Age: 35
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 240 (Muscular build)
Build/Body Type: Tall, broad-shouldered, some have even said he looks ‘Top Heavy’.
Complexion: Pale Andorian blue with subtle lavender accents. His coloration is noticeably lighter than most full-blooded Andorians. His Dinobululan mother’s features are very shallow but are still present.
Hair Color: Silver-white.
Hair Style: Often in a ponytail when working, off duty and sometimes at formal events Khoren has medium to tight curls to his shoulders.
Eye Color: Deep dark blue with silver streaks. His eyes occasionally appear slightly different in hue depending upon mood, although the effect is considerably less pronounced than in a full-blooded Denobulan.
Voice: Deep but warm, when obligated to participate in his local hometown choir, he is often placed amongst the bass vocalists.
Off-Duty Clothing Taste: Athletic and practical. Khoren used to be made fun of for his constant “ready to work” attire.
Distinguishing Features: Khoren possesses the Silver hair, White/Blue skin pigmentation, and antennae characteristic of his Andorian ancestry, combined with subtler versions of several Denobulan facial traits. Faint ridges from his temples toward his cheekbones, accompanied by a shallow vertical crease in the center of his forehead and slight ridging along the chin.
His antennae remain his most expressive physical feature, frequently betraying irritation, interest, amusement, or concern before his face does. This was a constant concern especially working the surgical floor.
== Personal History ==
Date of Birth: June 27
Place of Birth: Ashland, Oregon, Earth
Marital Status: Engaged
Siblings Name & Ages: “Lots”
Khoren's definition of “sibling” is somewhat more flexible than that of many Humans. Between his Andorian clan relationships and the enormous extended family created through his Denobulan heritage, he grew up surrounded by individuals whom he considered family even when the precise biological relationship was difficult to explain.
Mother's Name: Lethura Rix
Father's Name: Shrathen Ch’Talan
Parent's Status: Married
Pets: None at the moment, but always wanted a Wolf/Husky hybrid.
Best Friend: Dr.Paddack: Human. While Paddack was a practicing emergency physician and ‘on call’ doctor for Starfleet, Dr. Paddack was the best friend/family friend/mentor of Khoren in his youth. Often Paddack would let Khoren into his surgical proceedings as a tech, later as a physician/surgical assistant. Paddack was also the tie breaking vote with his family upon Khoren’s application to the academy.
Personal History:
Khoren Ch'Talan was born into two cultures in which family carried enormous importance, although neither culture agreed entirely on what a family was supposed to look like. His Andorian relatives gave him a strong sense of loyalty, personal responsibility, and physical discipline. His Denobulan relatives provided creativity, passion, optimism, excitement, artistic expression and empathy.
His mixed heritage started soon after his parents Lethura and Shrathen retired from Starfleet. While considering the quiet life, Shrathen was offered to teach military science at the local Ashland University, While Khoren’s mother was teaching physicians at a small hospital in the same small Oregon bordertown.
As Khoren grew older, he loved being a part of his local community, often participating in plays, musically performing with the choir, and eventually becoming a well-known figure in the music community.
Khoren initially pursued those interests through civilian education rather than Star Fleet. He studied kinesiology and biomechanics before entering medical training, where his fascination with movement gradually became an interest in what happened when movement went wrong. He was ultimately drawn toward orthopaedic surgery and physical performance, with an emphasis on musculoskeletal trauma, reconstruction, rehabilitation, and restoring injured patients to maximum function rather than simply keeping them alive.
As Khoren advanced in his medical education, he became more fascinated with comparative xenobiology consequently becoming a key component  of his professional interests.
By the time he considered Star Fleet service, Khoren had already established himself as a civilian physician and orthopaedic surgeon for those in the area of Ashland. He had no childhood dream of wearing a Star Fleet uniform and initially saw little reason to abandon a medical career he enjoyed simply to begin again as a cadet.
This career changed when a Starfleet vessel experienced a viral medical emergency, leading Starfleet Command to issue a strict quarantine, making the ship accessible exclusively to officers experienced in the ailment. However, with the nearest designated medical professional days away,  Khoren and Paddack were driven to provide aid to the helpless crew and travellers suffering within. Both of them booked forbidden transport, violating the quarantine order, and worked to remedy the viral situation within the ship, aided by their combined breadth of knowledge. After several hours within the quarantine, the CMO of the ship noticed the medical expertise of Khoren and his mentor. Instead of military punishment for violating a Starfleet edict,  Khoren was offered a letter or recommendation to join Starfleet as a medical officer. Khoren then recognized the potential of his skillset to do more than serve the comfortable community of his youth; there was real suffering to be alleviated, and new challenges and medical mysteries to face.

== Personality ==
Academy Majors: Medical, Orthopedic Surgery
Academy Minors: Xenobiology; Biomechanics, Basic Starfleet Piloting.
Hobbies & Past-Times: Strength training, recreational sports, Khoren often hosted as a Game Master for the traditional earth roleplaying and strategy games, also played saxophone adeptly. When given  piloting opportunities, he has been known to have an ‘artistic’ method of flying.
Most of his youth was occupied with watching and observing traditional earth sports.
Short-Term Goals: Establish himself as a dependable shipboard Medical Officer; broaden his experience beyond orthopaedics into emergency and general starship medicine; become comfortable treating species he previously encountered only academically.
Long-Term Goals: Grow the Federation's understanding and efficiency on xenobiology related orthopedic surgery and recovery post surgery. Write a few papers to advance starfleet medical. And to teach future medical officers.
Khoren also hopes to share his love for ancient earth sports by creating and coaching  such as baseball or football, specifically the throwing mechanics of the sports.
He has some interest in becoming a Chief Medical Officer, although he considers becoming worthy of the position more important than obtaining the title.
Personality: Khoren is curious, intensely social, and usually approachable. While he requires significant private time to reflect and recharge, he possesses considerable patience with patients and students, albeit considerably less patience with intellectual dishonesty, cruelty, or people who knowingly place others at risk for no greater good.
His manner can shift rapidly between Denobulan warmth and Andorian intensity. He enjoys debate in short bursts, asks an enormous number of questions, and is genuinely interested in how other people operate, both physically and mentally..
Professionally, he is off-puttingly confident. Years spent as a civilian specialist in physical performance and rehabilitation  has accustomed Khorento to having his medical opinion taken seriously, and adapting to a military chain of command has required conscious effort.
He is particularly likely to push back when he believes an order unnecessarily endangers a patient.
Sense of Humor: Playful, teasing, occasionally sarcastic, and sometimes delivered with such a spectacularly wide Denobulan smile that people cannot immediately determine whether he is joking.
Phobias: Khoren has a strange fear of Spiders, the sight of many-legged creatures paralyzes him instantly and needs someone else to break him from the concentration of his fear.
Likes: Difficult medical problems, physical competition, crowded social environments, direct communication, unusual anatomy, rehabilitation success stories, learning unfamiliar sports, and people willing to admit that they do not know something.
Dislikes: Needless cruelty, dishonesty, preventable injuries, intellectual arrogance, isolation, and treating a patient's chart instead of the patient.
Pet Peeves/Gripes: Patients who insist that they are “fine” despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary; patients who refuse rehabilitation instructions and then complain that they are not improving. Khoren almost goes into an irritating rant and has a specific voice when this happens. Those close to him will often pull him away when this rant is discovered.
Bad Habits / Vices: Khoren becomes deeply absorbed in interesting medical problems and sometimes forgets that other people do not want to discuss tendon loading, joint mechanics, or alien connective tissue over dinner. Despite Khoren being excited to have an important discussion, he tends to focus on unique medical procedures when he has no idea how to add to the discussion.
He also has difficulty surrendering responsibility once he believes a problem is his to solve.
Achievements: Becoming an accomplished civilian physician and orthopaedic surgeon; contributing to the treatment of casualties during the shipboard emergency that ultimately led him toward Star Fleet; completing Star Fleet Academy despite entering with an established professional identity and having to become a student again.
Disappointments: While he has a large list of medical skills, Khoren has always been depressed with his lack of continuing his music skills and occasionally has an involuntary tremor on his left hand as a result of the muscle atrophy.
Illnesses: Involuntary Tremors of his right hand, physicians are quick to say it's a result of withdrawal, but Khoren knows this is an atrophy of his musicianship.
Strengths: Calm under medical pressure; excellent knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy and biomechanics; Khoren has great strength with patients presenting with fright or frustration; physically capable; comfortable around unfamiliar cultures; relentlessly curious and appropriately inquisitive.
Weaknesses: Stubborn; occasionally overconfident within his specialty; has difficulty accepting an answer of “because that is procedure”; reluctant to abandon a patient or problem; can become confrontational when he believes medical judgment is being ignored.
His previous status as an established civilian physician can sometimes make taking orders from younger or less medically experienced superior officers frustrating for him, even when he knows intellectually that rank and expertise are not the same thing.
Fears: Being capable of saving or restoring someone's life but making the wrong decision when it matters; becoming so certain of his own expertise that he fails to listen to someone who knows something he does not.
Prejudices: Khoren has little tolerance for people who assume species determines ability, personality, intelligence, or occupation. Ironically, this can make him prejudge people whom he considers prejudiced, occasionally attributing malice to what is actually ignorance.

== Questions ==
Most Painful Experience: Upon a medical emergency, a student athlete experienced sudden cardiac arrest, while Khoren brought the appropriate equipment, the athlete was already passed. Khoren blamed his speed to approach the situation, despite all of his advisors telling him “he did everything right”
Best Time: Paddack gave him the ‘go ahead’ to find transport to a horribly medically quarantined Starfleet vessel. Khoren personally felt that he was in ‘heaven’ while he was helping all of those sick onboard. His enthusiasm was mostly observed by the CMO which led to the recommendation to Starfleet academy.
Most Crucial Experience: The shipboard medical emergency that led Khoren into Star Fleet service. It was the first time he understood that the skills he had developed as a civilian physician could serve a purpose beyond the walls of a hospital or clinic.
Role Model: Other than his best friend Dr.Paddack, the Chief Medical Officer who recommended him to Starfleet was a great influence. They did a great job, but Paddack’s approval was the final push Khoren needed to join Starfleet. When discussing with his biological parents, both of them were not only shocked but honored upon his suggestion of admission.
Referrer / How you found Fed Space: old member/need to have a creative writing outlet as a collegiate student.
