Lucy had decided to visit Stellar Cartography. 285-Upsilon-2 was the placeholder for the system. She felt it was a typically Terran designation. It went back to Terran attempts to catalogue the stars in the night sky. Each was given an identifier and attempted to be categorised based on radio waves, but it was rarely more than cataloguing.
Someone must have not thought there was much potential in the system when it was last surveyed. Three gas giants, and two planets. The two planets were in the ‘goldilocks’ zone, one slightly closer to their star. It was smaller and colder than Sol, which was curious. Sol has been a small unregarded yellow star at one time, life was prone to finding curious ways of existing.
The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one.
They'd have more information on planetary mechanics soon enough. Lucy was curious about how inhabited planets survived. The Solar System was a curiosity to her. Eight to nine planets. There was the Kuyper Belt and an asteroid belt. Two gas giants and other stuff. It would be interesting to see what kind of life this system had. The majority of the Solar System’s planets were on the same plane, except for Pluto which had an odd orbit.
The time travelling to 285-Upsilon-2 had been dull, but that was the difficulty with space travel. The distance between systems was so much and you really needed a warp capable vessel to travel it. It was pretty much an updated survey. Filling in anything the previous survey might have missed. One galaxy and a whole lot of solar systems.
She wondered how much searching for warp signatures played into first contact scenarios. The Prime Directive made contact tricky. There was a lot of balancing without altering a system. So many bad decisions for good reasons. It was always stuff.
