Qi looked up from his station and turned to look at the captain. He almost expected her to crack a smile. Of course not. The ship rocked as it assumed a tactical position. A flash of phaser fire illuminated the viewscreen. He was losing time. Every passing second was another decryption code that he should be running. Impossible as it seemed, this was what he was here to do.
“I suppose I haven’t tried before,” he said, uncertainty and determination each fighting for dominance in his tone.
Qi had spent much of his youth hacking machines. He loved cracking open a lock, just to prove that he could. He and his partner were always daring each other with things like this. Since joining Starfleet, he’d put that hobby away. Maybe it was time to dust it off again.
Cardassian technology was rarely state-of-the-art, but it was sturdy. Though their previous scrapes with Os’rusa had been too close for comfort, they’d been over far too quickly for Qi to map its computer systems. For all he knew, the Cardassians had completely overhauled its technology, along with the numerous more apparent upgrades.
Still, something told him to try the old stuff. Even if this version of Os’rusa was more capable than some of its old reliable counterparts, the Cardassian fleet would still need to be able to communicate with each other. A chain was only as strong as its weakest link. He could hide malicious data in a data packet disguised as a Dominion War-era Cardassian communication. If they were lucky, this wouldn’t raise any alarms until it was too late.
He accessed the Yeager’s communication system and sent the data packet, bouncing it off their hidden probe to disguise its origin. His brow was starting to sweat.
Don’t get greedy, he thought, eyes fixed on his prize. Even if this works, they’ll flush you out if you try to mess with anything major. A minor power fluctuation will be enough to prove that we’re in.
