Lucy looked around before stepping away from the bar. The Obscene Snowman Zone had the strongest lure. She had pondered the Rocket Sled Zone, but knew her marksmanship really wasn’t up there. She really wanted to invite Emily the new medical Middie to join her, but wasn’t sure if the S-no-man she had in mind was something Emily would appreciate. She had a mental image of a few ideas. There was one that was just the right side of risqué. Of course, her right side of risqué was likely raise more than a few eyebrows.
The ’snow’ was good. Not the kind that soaked your gloves or made you question what you were shaping with. The initial form was a tall column with a head on top, not taller than herself. Some of it was a self-image, slightly enhanced. She shaped the sides into approximations of arms. She carefully used the edge of her hand to draw a line to show the length of the legs and made a similar line on the opposite side.
Then Lucy lifted two average sized pieces of coal and a smaller piece. She picked out a carrot that was just the right length for a cute nose. The hat and scarf were tricky as she couldn’t go with red or purple, that would be confusing. Blue or green were also options. Science blue was just the right fit. She placed the two pieces of coal at the right height for the eyes and inserted the carrot in roughly the middle of the S-no-man’s face. Using her pinky finger she drew a smile and placed the smaller bit of coal as a beauty mark to the right hand side of the face, just a bit above the smile.
She decided to leave the hat and scarf to last as they were the S-no-man’s hair and they would impede the last two additions if she added them too soon. Taking a handful of snow she went round to the back and added one buttock then the other at the right position below the perceived waistline. Lucy cautiously shaped them together. She was glad when they stayed in place.
Going back round to the front Lucy assessed her creation and lifted an orb of snow and shaped it until it felt about the right size. She placed it on one side of the torso with the top an inch or so below the line of the armpit. She shaped another orb and placed it next to the first one. Lastly she draped the scarf over the head to simulate flowing hair having both ends going forward over the shoulders and placed the hat on top.
Lucy looked upon her S-no-man and was satisfied. It would be fun if she won, but she was likely to be up against some very stiff competition. She did wonder who would be assessing the snowmen. There was such a thing a playing to your audience. She left her entry to the judges or whoever it was and went back to the Still. This time she took a seat next to Emily, but didn’t know how to start. She took a risk and placed an order with the server who approached her.
“Hot chocolate with marshmallows, please.”
A glass of steaming brown liquid topped with a mixture of white and pink mini marshmallows was presented before Lucy. She watched the marshmallows melt as she tried to formulate her next move. She had expressed herself in very broad brushstrokes. The S-no-man was open to a mixture of interpretations and she’d be lying if she didn’t say she was a little anxious about how she would be received.
