As she watched people walk in and look around, their reactions were enough to make Mara smile to herself. Her involvement wasn’t common knowledge - at least, she didn’t think it was - and she was certainly likely to be some way down the list if anyone was trying to identify a likely suspect.
I think it was worth the effort though. So far, at least the Bandaran thought to herself. Stood alone at the bar, she watched Miller, Sydesh, Mayfair and Star all enter. Their reactions made her laugh, and she was still grinning to herself as she topped off her glass.
It turned out Mara was in good company, as Tyra greeted her.
"Do I want to know how you acquired so much shine in such a short time? And not the shitty stuff either," the Captain said, raising her glass. "This certainly takes the cake for the most uniquely themed gathering too."
“High praise indeed comin’ from you,” Mara replied with a waspish grin, raising her own glass of the non-alcoholic version. “I don’t drink so I can’t take credit for the ‘shine. I found a couple of stills that the owner thinks he hid when I was on patrol. Nearly dismantled ‘em but I know how this crew works. So I copied ‘em, went back and took a sample, and that’s the basis for what the still here is churnin’ out. I made a dark bargain with the benevolent Cap’n Morgan for her help puttin’ on the show and she knew someone who made it work.”
“As for the rest of it…” She turned to have another look, the smile plastered across her face. “I’ll be honest. I was f*ckin’ nervous waitin’ for people to get here. You make jokes, you don’t always know how they’re gonna land. It’s a risk. I could still end up over the coals if the complaints come rollin’ in. But better that than another cut and paste, borin’ as sh*t, drinks in the lounge style of thing. I hate those. There’s no gettin’ away from the awkward. This at least, there’s no excuse for anyone to hide in a corner.” She paused and then grinned again. “Well. ‘cept the safe zone, ‘cause that’s what that’s for.”
