"I think it's brilliant, Mara might not have wanted to do this initially, but she's pulled off one hell of a party," Aeyrn said. Beka mirrored Robin's thoughts as she responded.
“Hang on. You said Mara did this?” the doctor asked. “Mara Calleja? The big one? Security officer? She organised this party? No way. This has got to be a real Artemis long termer, surely. To be able to crack these jokes at our expense, that’s got to take some confidence.”
Robin nodded in agreement. She never would have figured Mara for a party planner, especially something like this. She was impressed. It was creative, fun, and already seemed to be generating enthusiasm among the crew. Far better than the run-of-the-mill Christmas parties she'd been to. She stared a moment across the bay, spotting Dr. Sonaalk (of all people) in the southeast corner, engaged in a chess game with another Vulcan crew member, a female she recognized from Science. In all her time aboard the Artemis the nurse had *never* seen him socialize, never seen him attend any event that wasn't work-related.
Is this a date? Do Vulcans even do that? I mean, sure, he's playing chess at a party, but is this progress?
She determined to go say hello to him later. She was technically his superior, despite his having decades of experience more than her. The only reason he wasn't CMO was because he had outright refused the job. And he'd been invaluable as an advisor, never seeming to mind when she had questions. The young medic needed all the advice she could get.
“So what are we going to play then?" Beka asked. "I’m not sure my back would thank me for going hard in the Insecure Male Zone, and the safest place to be when I’m shooting is where I’m aiming…”
"Yeah, don't think I could handle axe-throwing with my stringbean arms, but I wouldn't mind giving knife-throwing a shot. And of course I've gotta go to the Idol Zone later. How about you, Aeryn? Do you have a preference?"
