The friendly banter between Aeryn and Beka warmed Robin's heart. Beka deserved happiness, and she also deserved someone who could match her force of personality. Aeryn certainly qualified.
“Oh, I’ve got a list,” Beka joked. “‘Do no harm’ doesn’t apply to parties, right? It certainly didn’t with my ex.”
"Nope. It's in the second part, the one no one reads. Ex's are fair game," Robin said with a broad smile.
“I think I remember how to do this,” she said. “It’s about getting the spin right so the blade hits where you want it to… The guy who taught me, well, let’s just say he had plenty of practice.”
Beka's first toss wasn't much better than Robin's first throw, falling to the deck. But her next throw hit the edge of the center ring and her last buried itself dead center. Robin applauded.
"C'mon Robin, let's show her what we've got and remember what you've seen us both do, you'll be hitting the target in no time," Aeryn said. Robin smiled at the encouragement. As the nurse had expected, the Security chief's throws were expert. Two shots dead center. She retrieved her knives and stood back.
Robin lifted her knifes, felt their balance. It was true, she'd watched both women throw, seen how they held the knives and how they'd moved. She took a breath and centered herself.
I think I've got it. Don't worry about showing off. Both of them are your friends. And don't worry if you embarrass yourself, either.
Time seemed to slow for the young Augment. With sudden speed Robin whipped a knife out with her right hand, followed a moment later with the one in her left hand. The first knife buried itself dead center, exactly where Beka's blade had hit, and the other landed a moment later a centimeter to the left of it.
"How was that?" she asked with a grin.
