“You pair of lightweights,” Beka teased. “I don’t even drink and I’m still going up. Even though my whole ‘public singing’ career was one chorus around a camp fire in the Delta Quadrant.”
"Guilty of being a lightweight as charged. One cup o' that drain cleaner and I'd be loaded." She tossed her empty soda cup and headed over with her friends. There were a few people already singing, but with the sound dampers their voices were muted by the sound dampening fields and even Robin couldn't hear them. She motioned to a booth as Beka joked.
“That sounded a lot like volunteering to go first to me,” Beka shot back with evil smile. "Do these booths do choir girl? If it really was our Security department who set them up then I’m gonna bet no. Present company excepted, of course!”
"They'll do." Of the Artemis crew, only Beka had actually heard Robin sing, and it really was at a church on her home colony. She'd performed a bluegrass gospel song for the congregation, and had loved it. Robin had been so busy that she hadn't had the chance to sing in public again. "And I'll show you a 'choir girl,'" she said with a grin that matched Beka's. She stepped up on the small stage and picked up a bass guitar from among the selection of instruments. There was a console available for karaoke background music, and she selected a song and entered a few instrument settings. The purple-haired young woman quickly and expertly checked the tuning, humming a few perfect notes and making tiny adjustments.
She tapped the console and the music started. Robin began playing the guitar, clearly relishing the chance to sink her teeth into something different. She'd played this back on the SS Triple Seven during a Christmas party when she was 15, and had relished the chance to spread her wings and perform something less serious. The song would have been scandalous on her serious homeworld.
"Haji was a punk just like any other boy
And he never had no trouble till he started up his Oi band
Safe in the garage or singing in the tub
Till Haji went too far and he plugged in at the pub
'Twas a cold Christmas eve when Trevor and the skins
Popped in for a pint and to nick a back of crisps
Trevor liked the music but not the Unity
He unwound Haji's turban and he knocked him to his knees
If God came down on Christmas Day
I know exactly what He'd say
He'd say "Oi to the punks and Oi to the skins
And Oi to the world and everybody wins!"
As she sang, her voice crystal clear, she lost herself to the music and the guitar. Her voice wasn't right for punk, so she'd gone with more of No Doubt's version.
As she finished with a loud "Oi! Oi!" she bowed and put the bass guitar back.
"Choir girl," she said with a wicked smile at Beka and Aeryn.
