“It’ll take more than a song to shed that rep,” Beka teased. “But you’ve definitely given it a good go!”
"Yeah, fair point," Robin laughed. She really was the 'good girl,' and she wasn't actually eager to shed that or to change. Even during her teenaged years, freed from the confining control of her homeworld, she really hadn't done much in the way of rebellion. "I'm not exactly going to go punk, though I wouldn't have to dye my hair."
She actually had tried dying it once, as a teenager, and never had again. Her attempt to go blonde had instead resulted in a horrible pink usually reserved for stomach medicines. The crew of the Triple Seven had laughed for weeks. She wasn't ever going to be as daring as her friend, and that was fine.
I mean I won't even walk through the ship corridors in a bathing suit. Choir girl I am, and Choir girl I shall remain.
Aeryn had let Beka go next. Robin wasn't sure whether the Security Chief was shy or really didn't know what she was going to sing. Robin hoped she hadn't pushed her friend; some people were really shy about singing in public. But it turned out that Beka wasn't one of them. She was a natural performer, belting out a song with a skill and gusto that impressed the young nurse. It was a great performance and Robin cheered loudly. The redheaded doctor headed straight for her new girlfriend as soon as it was over.
Robin felt a bit of jealousy. She wasn't 'into' girls, but she loved to see happy couples and the two of them made such a great pair; for a moment it reminded the Augment of her completely nonexistent love life. She pushed the feeling aside.
Yeah? Whose fault is that? I've had chances and I always passed on them, and truth is I've been all too comfortable with the 'everyone's little sister' thing or claiming that I was too busy with work. Be happy for them, you little twit.
And she was. Both Beka and Aeryn had known great tragedy in their lives, and they deserved happiness more than anyone. She really, really hoped it would work.
It was Aeryn's turn. A version of 'Black Velvet' that knocked Robin's socks off. Aeryn had a great voice, though she wasn't practiced. Her confidence and voice improved with every line, and by the midpoint she was absolutely nailing it. Robin was cheering again even before it was over.
Man, I needed this so much. Gotta make sure to thank Mara.
"All right, ladies, what's next?" she asked when the song was over and Aeryn had climbed down. While Robin could have spent the entire night happily singing, there was too much to do here. Maybe later, she decided, especially if Aeryn and Beka decided to have some quality time together.
