Captain's Log, Stardate 202404.07, Captain Jane Fields recording:

We were tasked with surveying a spatial anomaly in the 99 Herculis star system which had appeared out of nowhere on long range sensors from a Federation Listening Post. The evidence was this could likely be a subspace rift and its sudden appearance suggested it was not natural. The system is a binary F-type star system with no inhabited planets, on the edge of Federation space close to the border with Ferengi space.

We arrived to find evidence this was a temporal rift emitting tachyons and gravitons and traces of chronitons which was increasing very quickly. The rift enlarged suddenly and a very strange craft appeared. It seemed extremely advanced and like nothing on record. The vessel had a gold-coloured hull made of an unknown metallic alloy and was shaped like a lion. Our sensors had trouble penetrating the hull which was clearly made of an advanced material. We attempted to communicate with the occupants of the vessel, but received nothing back other than unintelligible roaring sound. It then attacked us with weapons that cut right through our shields. The directed energy weapon they were using was based quite probably on exotic particles as it left muon particles behind. The vessel itself was impenetrable to our weapons. We had damage and casualties across three decks from the first hit. However, Powl our tactical officer recommended polarising our shields and this prevented damage from a second barrage.

At this point, small s-shaped ships begin appearing from the rift to attack. These turned out to be easy to destroy but whenever one was taken out, another two more appeared out of the rift. It became clear that we must close the rift or be overwhelmed and destroyed.

While Engineering scrambled to manage the damage, Science Officer Ra'an came up with a plan to seal the rift which involved collecting up some of tachyon radiation, drawing the hostile vessels close to the rift and detonating torpedoes while releasing the particles. It was a tricky and risky manoeuver, and our Vulcan Tac officer Powl was able to help coordinate and create a program to manage the fine calculations.

The explosion of the radiation using the torpedo worked to close the rift, however, the shockwave hit Titania. The energy and radiation wave propelled us away from the rift. This caused more damage across the ship and burnt out the main deflector. Something very strange had happened to our location.  We seemed to have been propelled out of the system. In fact, sensors showed the ship was now no longer in 99 Hercullis but two systems away in Chi Herculis. Perhaps the shockwave from closing the rift contained some exotic radiation, but it still wasn’t clear how we could have crossed such a distance in such a short time, unless we had passed through some subspace conduit or tear. Thankfully, it was soon confirmed we were still in our or time and universe.

We have called the nearest starbase to send a ship to help with repairs, as they are going to take some days.

Ultimately, we have sealed the rift and potentially prevented an incursion into our space from a dangerous enemy. Lots of questions remain about the origin of the vessels that came through the rift or what caused the disturbance in subspace. I am not sure we will get any answers though.

End log.
