“How long have you been assigned here?”
“Me? Erm…” Mara was genuinely stumped by the question, and it took her a few seconds to do the maths. “6 months or so I think? It’s only been 2 missions, and there’s only so much I can say about either. Life around here certainly ain’t borin’.”
She chuckled dryly.
“But you were right about Artemis bein’ welcomin’,” she added. “Don’t get me wrong, standards are high around here. And it can be a bit intimidatin’ at first, workin’ for a Captain who’s a literal legend and serial hero. But if you can keep up and make the most of the opportunity you got bein’ here… There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.”
Calleja took a sip from her glass.
“They took me in. I… I don’t have a spotless record, it’s fair to say. Definitely not your normal path to Star Fleet either. But I got a blank slate here, and a chance to impress. I took it, and I’m gonna keep takin’ any more they give me. Not sure I did with this though.” She made a gesture to take in the party. “This is my warped imagination in action. I don’t think many of them have worked that out, but yeah. They made me feel like I belong here, so this is my way of sayin’ thanks. In my own weird way.”
She grinned.
“I don’t know much about the Philly, but I’m sure you’ll be fine. Although you gotta tell me. How in the name of inappropriate relationships did you end up with our fine FO? There’s a story there I gotta hear.”
It was clear from the glint in her eye that Mara was teasing Ju. The Security officer was just enjoying the novelty of someone being happy to talk to her without being worried or intimidated. That was her real ‘dark secret’. Despite her height, her build, her reputation for tearing through Cardassians bare-handed, Calleja was absolutely no threat to anyone on her own side. The protective instincts ran deep, as did the waspish sense of humour.
