Mara had not been here as long as Ju had assumed. Only two missions or about six months was all. The level of comfort the woman had within her own skin had lead Ju to believe that it had been a lot longer. It was interesting to find out these little tidbits and to be reminded how assumptions went when you were just taking someone at face value. She knew that not everyone thought she was going to be a great officer, but at the same time, she knew that she would prove herself through time and experience. Ju was glad and lucky that she would be given that opportunity here in Starfleet.
The young officer talked about how the ship was amazing but working under such a well known Captain and hero was daunting. “I can only imagine,” Ju admitted as she turned to the bar while Mara continued speaking and quickly picked up one of the drinks sitting out on the counter for those walking by and enjoying their time. Taking a sip, she pursed her lips a moment at the strong taste but didn’t wince. She was used to bitter and strong having grown up in Korea.
When Mara admitted that she had no spotless record and yet the Artemis had not only taken her in but also given her a chance to prove herself without judgement Ju gave a soft smile, she didn’t have any kind of record to speak of yet but knowing the kind of Captain that seemed to be running a ship that accepted outcasts. “That’s nice. I haven’t even gotten a chance to really meet anyone on the Philly except one friend. And I didn’t leave the best taste in the Captain’s mouth but… I guess lessons are learned the hard way in the Fleet.”
It was then that the real questions began. Mara asked how in the world she had met the First Officer and how did they end up together. A grin crossed Ju’s face with a slight blush dusting her cheeks. She stalled a moment to try to let the smile on her face fade by taking a sip of her drink again.
“So it’s quite a story. I was on the Promenade and ran into a girl who was also just graduated who was also assigned to my ship. Destiny, I guess. We decided to kill time by buying some supplies. I like to do origami and crafts so we hit the craft store which is where your Commander ran into us. I’m not sure why he was in there, or maybe I didn’t retain it.” Ju gave a smile.
“Anyway, we decided to check out and leave after Ichika, my friend, destroyed a whole display of paint and glitter. We headed to Quark’s get a drink and just talk. Once we sat down and ordered our drinks I pulled a bag of candy out of my pocket to have some fun with a drinking game. The Korean culture .. we like our drinking.” She chuckled giving a bit of a shrug.
“Anyway, we were all set, talking about the rules of the game when Ichika takes one sip of her drink and completely headbutts the table. The sound was so loud. We were absolutely shocked. Caught the attention of everyone in the bar including my now Captain. So turns out Ichika has some sort of allergy or something to alcohol and so we had to abandon the plan, take her to the medbay. After we dropped her off we hung out for a couple hours until she was released.”
Ju couldn’t help but chuckle at the whole situation. “I’ve never, in all my life, seen such a light weight. It was absolutely nuts and it made the Commander and me look like we had allowed her to drink too much. Tea only for the Japanese from now on.” She smiled remembering that day quite vividly especially since it was so recent.
