Tyra kept her face as impassive as possible as she listened to Han explain in detail the circumstances that had led her to being kicked off of the Philadelphia's away team. The only time her expression flickered just slightly was when Han explained her reaction to the bubble gum comment, the corner of her lip pulling just a little into the start of a grimace.
It seemed like a situation that had spiraled out of control due to inexperience, a high stress environment and the lack of even one cool head. In her many years in command of both a department and a starship, she had seen this situation play out numerous times and had to step in to prevent it from cascading probably just as often. It was the issue with having a team made up of young officers, new department heads and inexperienced first officers because none of them had the experience or wisdom to step back when high stress, insecurity and egos clashed. The fact that this had spiraled out of control without one person seeing the ridiculousness of it all was rather fantastic and based on the report, even distance hadn’t led to the realization dawning on anyone.
The redhead rubbed her forehead with her free hand before taking a sip of her coffee, hoping that it somehow managed to make her desire to roll her eyes a little less. It didn't. The only thing she could be grateful for was that it hadn't happened on her ship because she likely would have torn all parties involved a new one. She could only imagine what would happen when real insubordination occurred with real consequences, like with Nathan or Price or Alken or Lucy or any one of a handful of examples she could pull right off the top of her head.
“In hindsight, I realize, I should have handled the situation better. It would have been easier to spit out the piece of candy or swallow it at least. I just stood there, and thought about, how I hadn’t done anything to deserve being spoken to like that. I thought I wanted to stand up for myself, I realize that was not the time nor place. I do endeavor to do better in the future.”
Tyra slowly nodded her head. "High stress situations tend to lead to short tempers and big egos, it's just the nature of the beast. The sooner that's acknowledged and taken into account when handling conflict during those situations, the better it is for everyone. I won't beat a dead horse though; you know what you need to work on in the future and I trust that you will."
Her words were punctuated with another nod of her head, though more decisive as if she was calling the matter closed in her books. While she would have liked to have seen a more measured response from both of Han's superiors, she also knew she had bitten people's heads off over small offenses in the past as well; however, she'd also given second chances to people for far greater and more significant grievances. This wasn't career ending nor should it haunt her for the rest of her career.
"Moving on…"
For a moment, she paused, blue eyes shifting from Han to the cup in her hand as if she was looking for some sort of answer in the dark liquid. In truth, she was attempting to figure out a way to phrase something without it seeming offensive or even presumptuous. The security officer in her wanted to charge forward with bluntness and possibly just shock the truth out of the young woman but the captain in her felt the need to be a little more tactful.
"So why Artemis? And what are you hoping to gain from this transfer?"
