Beka was silent as she listened to Aeryn, just taking it all in. The redhead was still learning when to be quiet but even she knew this was one of those moments.
“Yes, I know Science isn't as action-packed as Security, but I desperately needed a change, a new focus and I wouldn't just hand over my department to someone who's going to run it into the ground."
“I know.” Beka leaned in, resting her head on her girlfriend’s shoulder. “It just caught me by surprise, is all. I mean, I knew you enjoyed tending to gardens. Just didn’t know how deep the love for biology and botany ran. You’ve got hidden talents.”
There was a smile on the redhead’s lips as she spoke.
“And there was a part of me that was like… Calleja? Really?” she added, sitting up straight again. “But then I sat and thought about it. I know I blamed her for me getting hurt, but it wasn’t her fault. She put her life on the line for me. She got a team together, put in a plan that was proof against everything except me being a raging hothead, and got us all out again. My family are living in her apartment for crying out loud. And she hadn’t even met me. She did it anyway. Even though I’ve been nothing but a cow to her since. Maybe you can help me broker a ceasefire?”
Sydesh sighed. She had been feeling guilty for a while about how she’d behaved towards the person who had saved her life at least twice in the space of a few hours.
"There's something else too, something I was keeping as a surprise. Chief of Science wasn't the only promotion that I got," Aeryn added.
“Oh really? Do I need to break out the champagne?” Beka replied with a big smile. “Well. I would if I kept any. We can pretend.”
