It wasn’t the first time Beka had run across Artemis to get to a meeting on time, and it wasn’t likely to be the last either. At least she had a defence this time. The elective procedure she’d been carrying out to replace and upgrade a very rudimentary prosthetic limb for CPO Hyde had taken a lot longer than planned. It wasn’t just a case of replacing the hardware. She’d had to replace the whole nervous interface as well, and that had meant some very prolonged and delicate work. There were no shortcuts in that kind of surgery and she had been in there for over 5 hours non-stop.
If I hadn’t been fixed myself, there’s no way I could have done it. But I’m paying for it now though! My back is screaming…
Sydesh had spent the leave period getting back to fitness after her spinal operation. The redhead had made a conscious choice that she didn’t want to be as jacked as she had been before. It had been great being that strong, but having to spend so much time in the gym and topping up her calorie intake had been so time-consuming that she was happy with her new, more lithe physique.
And it’s not like I’m unfit or anything. I can still run, I can still lift. If anything I feel faster. I don’t remember being that quick through my forms before, not even when I was taking my black belt tests.
The doctor was one of the last attendees to slip into the briefing room, clutching a rapidly-cooling coffee like it was an elixir of life. She nodded in greeting to Robin, winked at Aeryn and then slid into a seat next to Mara.
There were some people present that the redhead didn’t recognise but that wasn’t a surprise. She wasn’t plugged into any of the gossip networks and shore leave took away her main opportunity to keep up to date with what happened on the ship, as nurses and patients weren’t whispering around Sickbay where she could hear them. Mayfair wasn't the only medic who could hear like a bat.
Calleja seemed to be intently watching an unfamiliar woman in Command red, and Sydesh gently elbowed the Security chief. Relations between the two had improved dramatically and whilst they had a way to go to be friends, Beka certainly wasn’t intimidated by the other woman any more.
“Hey,” she said, her voice not quite as low as she thought it was. “What did I miss? When does the boss get here?”
