Grant said that he hadn't had the chance to meet Captain Givens yet, and Robin was about to respond that she hadn't either when a young woman in command red entered the room. The nurse acknowledged him with a nod instead.
The new Captain took her seat. There was a definite (and understandable) strain in the room, with the close-knit Artemis crew not sure what to make of her. Robin put aside her annoyance at Starfleet's poor decisions and politics, because they weren't relevant. Captain Givens had to be judged on her own merits, not saddled with the blame for the idiotic decisions of the admiralty.
She looks so... young. And that's coming from me.
“Hey,” she said, Beka said in a low voice to Mara. “What did I miss? When does the boss get here?”
The CMO fixed her gemstone-colored eyes on her friend with a look that said 'zip it.'
Not cool, Beka. It's time for business, and I'm pretty sure the Captain heard you. Coleman sure did.
She hoped she wouldn't have to step in. Beka had a tendency to blurt things out that she regretted saying later, and Robin admired her bluntness... sometimes. This wasn't one of those times.
"If I can have everyone's attention, please," Givens began. Her southern drawl was much more pronounced than Robin's soft Appalachian accent.
Kentucky or Tennessee, if I had to guess.
"I'm Captain Cassandra Givens. As of about 10 hours ago, I was assigned as the acting commanding officer of the Artemis. Some of y'all may have seen me over the past few weeks as I conducted the command review following..."
The absolute crapshow that was the Callisto mission. You don't have to say it.
"Following the reclamation of the Callisto. I say that to say I am not a total stranger to this ship, your history or your files, though I understand that I am a stranger to y'all."
Givens wasn't coming across as a hardass who was here to purge the ship, and that was a good sign. She hoped that the Captain didn't have any biases against Augments, because Robin's promotion and department head status had been very much against the grain of standard procedure. Without Tyra Crawford the Augment had little doubt she would have still been an Ensign doing first aid and emptying bedpans on some random space station in the middle of nowhere. Crawford had given her the chance to shine, and she'd done so despite having a previous CMO turn out to be a hidden Augment who'd murdered several people and poisoned the command staff.
But it's still early, and the Captain hasn't had the chance to meet with you yet. Stow your usual Pollyanna optimism until you know that she'd not going to transfer you to the K-7 station because of your freaky genes.
"Before anyone asks, I do not know how long I will preside over this particular circus, as your previous captain so lovingly referred to you all. On that, I'm as in the dark as you all are but I understand that you all have been left in the dark about more than you should be. I can't promise I have answers for everything but I am willing to answer any pressing questions before we get down to business."
There was no reason to expect that Givens would have been told anything about the legal situation with Elias and Crawford, of course. Robin wanted to ask about the mission but kept silent. The Captain would get to that.
Just no more Cardassians. I'm beyond sick of them.
Robin was still coming to terms with the Callisto mission. She hated that she'd been forced to shoot one, an idiot who had been yelling and charging down the Callisto corridor into phaser fire, but he'd already injured away team members. The medic hadn't been the one who'd killed him (that had been the late Midshipman D'Mar), but nonetheless she'd assisted with a stun shot. And then there was the USS Brittany, a ship filled with corpses where the Cardassians had set a trap and kidnapped Crawford. They were like the villains from bad holomovies, always engaged in amateur schemes... but their plots always cost lives.
She shook her head to indicate 'no questions' and let the Captain continue. Anything the nurse had to ask could wait for the department head meeting.
