The new arrival taking the seat usually for the Captain was unexpected. It looked as if consequences had been enacted. The man in the Chief Engineer’s uniform was the same one who had been talking to Damian at Ju’s party. Now Captain Givens had introduced herself. With the number of crew present this could have been done in the Officer’s Lounge. Holding it in the Briefing Room felt overwhelmingly tense.
Finding out that Starfleet Command had installed an acting CO was… strange. Lucy didn’t mind not being part of that grapevine, but nobody below Damian had been told. The questions from Aeryn and Mara certainly showed it. Also Beka’s flippancy could be taken either way. Tyra and Ben were currently not part of the crew roster. Having an acting CO left the door open, but there was the possibility of a desk job.
Gotta stop dwelling on this ********! Just be glad you’re not the ringmaster or the senior clown.
It hurt to find out this way. Starfleet likely wanted to adjust a perceived characteristic of the Artemis’ crew. Also papering over how they ****** over a crew that while unorthodox got things done. Miss Givens certainly had been the unfortunate participant in a game of hot potato (with a live grenade) and even temporarily replacing Captain Crawford was going to take an interesting amount of good will from the crew.
It came down to how Tyra had been moved from the role of Captain of the Artemis. Politics was a mug’s game, but that meant the joy of getting to suffer for somebody else’s bad decision making. It was as Mara said not blaming Cassandra for being handed the short straw. Lucy was glad she had no questions. She almost wondered if Damian wanted a hug, but he had Ju, so Lucy was safe-ish on that point. The compulsion was hard to shake, but she could work on restraining herself, until she found someone she wouldn’t get shot for hugging.
