Jaein had lost count of the number of briefings he'd been in in his career. He'd even been part of several of them with a change of command happening, either planned or sudden. When he was with the Bajoran Militia after the Dominion War, there had been a spate of officers leaving to join Starfleet, and then when he had been one of those, being in ship construction had meant officers were constantly coming and going, either back to the fleet 'proper' or going for the first time. After all, there wasn't a lot of chance for upward mobility in the shipyards. He'd even had the occasional scandal that had to be smoothed over, though not very often. Usually the issues were more mundane than this one, obviously - an improper relationship requiring a reassignment, or once in the militia there had even been a small black market broken up - but they'd existed.
Those, however, had all failed to hold a candle to this one. And we haven't even gotten to the actual briefing yet.
Ensign Han introduced herself properly, a firm handshake and a wide smile good signs as to her demeanor. He was going to say something, but never got the chance. A particularly mouthy medical officer stage whispered a blunt comment wondering where the captain was, and drew everyone's attention. The first officer, Commander Coleman, pointedly addressed Captain Givens to make clear she was in fact in charge, and she finally called the meeting to order.
He took a seat next to the ensign, instinctively gravitating towards his own department - notedly, they were the only representatives of engineering present - as Givens pressed on. He couldn't help but notice how carefully she was picking her words, obliquely referencing the previous mission and trying her best to offer the chance to just move past it and get on with the business of running the ship.
A chance that was swiftly not taken. The CSO spoke up after the call for questions was put out: "Is there anything you can tell us about what happened to Captain Crawford and Commander Elias? All we know is that they're no longer on the ship."
Before Givens could respond, there was a sharp snap, a glass breaking in the security chief's hand, and all eyes were swiftly on her. “All I gotta say is, some of us might need a sharp reminder that what happened to Tyra ain’t your fault," she said into the silence. "You’re just the poor sod that got volunteered to hold the reins and you don’t deserve to be on the wrong end of how we feel about the process playin’ out. So if we…" There was a pause and a sigh, as if she was gathering herself. "OK. Me. If I look hostile, it ain’t at you. I’ll get over it, and if there’s anythin’ I can do to help ease you into life around here, I’ll do it. But I do wanna echo Commander Miller’s question. If there’s anythin’ you can tell us about what happened to Tyra and Benjamin, I’d sure appreciate it.”
Givens gave a warm smile, looking a little more relaxed than she had been. "Thank you, Lieutenant," the captain said. "I appreciate it and I think we're all in agreement on how awkward of a situation it is." She then continued to give a little more information, though it was only a little. Benjamin was still going through the trial process, it seemed, while the previous captain was on 'administrative leave'.

Tensions were high, and at the very least he wanted to know where the landmines were so he could attempt to avoid them, though he knew that simply by virtue of his position it was quite likely he was already standing in the middle of the field. For now, he thought, best to just see the lay of the land.
