There was a twinge of relief that flickered across Mara’s face as the new Captain seemed to take her intervention well. It was safe to say the Bandaran did not enjoy a reputation for tact or diplomacy.
Maybe that’s why Givens is looking a bit more relaxed. I suppose I’m probably seen as a Crawford loyalist, and yeah, I am. What happened to her sucks. You leave me in a room with JAG and no cameras, we’ll have a few less lawyers in this galaxy. But I’m not gonna unload on someone who was completely unconnected to the carnage.
"She's currently on an indefinite leave following the resolution of her judicial woes. As for what she actually pled no contest to, you'd be better off reaching out to her yourselves but I believe she won't have a difficult time finding a landing spot once her penance has been paid. No doubt Security HQ will be salivating at the chance to bring her back into the fold and frankly, if I was her, I'd feel a lot better about orange over crimson at the moment."
Calleja’s expression was stoic as she absorbed the information. The news was about as grim as she thought it was going to be. It certainly sounded like the end for both of them and that cut deep.
"Thank you, Captain, I appreciate you answering my question, and I'm with Lieutenant Calleja about how this isn't your fault. Therefore, I'd like to welcome you to Artemis, and I look forward to hearing what our next mission will involve."
Aeryn speaking gave Mara time to pull her thoughts together. The Security chief wanted to say something meaningful, and to try and put Cass at her ease. But the words tasted like ash on her tongue. She managed a nod to acknowledge the answer but she stayed silent, her gaze focused on the refracting light on the cracked glass in front of her.
Fuck. Guess that’s that.
Mara was dimly aware of Miles asking a question but she was only half-listening. She felt Tyra’s loss keenly, and it was going to take her time to adjust to the new reality on board Artemis.
At some point I gotta take the pain and get to know this new Captain. I think that’s how I deal with this. Get to know her, hopefully warm to her a little, and then I can feel better about fallin’ into line if that’s on the cards. Assumin’ she wants to talk to me. She did her whole review for Command without needin’ anythin’ from me so I’m not countin’ on bein’ particularly valuable.
Broad shoulders rose and fell as Mara silently drew in a deep breath and let it out slowly. She had a few friends on the crew, and once this meeting was over she was going to need them.
