There were some officers, including Damian, who received a Gold Star. The shining stars glistened against the overhead lighting as the case lay open on the table in the center of the room. It seemed as though everyone in the room, many at least, were included in the Gold Star Awards. Ju had not received a medal but she hadn’t done anything for one either. Everything that had gone down on the Philly had really hurt her chances of having any recognition at all for her first mission, even just a kind word. Maybe.. this is a fresh start for me. Starting over. This could be my first mission, scrapping the last one… Ju thought to herself, hoping at she would at least be able to show her worth this time.
Damian stood up and walked over to Grant, who she was still standing next to. He opened the box and officially promoted Grant to a Lieutenant stating he wanted to do such a thing in person. When Damian turned she nudged Grant with her elbow slightly. “Congrats, Lieutenant.” She whispered to him with a genuine smile on her face. Damian had headed off to the quiet Medical officer, who he then promoted to Ensign.
Ju liked the way that it was done in front of everyone, she knew that some people didn’t like that kind of thing but she had been promoted on the fly, in the middle of a mutinous bridge, before she had even gotten her feet wet. It had been such a cast away comment, but it had been a promotion, just not the kind he had expected. Ju knew that every Captain did their own thing and built their own practice, but promotions were earned and she felt like many of them deserved their own moment.
There was quick movement suddenly, Ju looked over to see Damian stepping carefully in front of Mara after he had given the newly minted Ensign her pip. Mara had been headed out the door, the look on her face said it was anger or perhaps disappointment in the situation here that led to it, but Ju couldn’t be sure. Unlike Damian, she hadn’t spent enough tie around the other shipmates to gauge their emotions easily and there were a lot of people here.
Ju had no idea what was going on, but she imagined that Mara wasn’t going to take kindly to being blocked by Damian and knowing her personality a little bit the way she did, she figured it wasn’t going to go well for him. The last thing anyone needed was for her to knee him in the balls or something publicly. Ju was not far from the door, leaning against the wall still next to Grant.
“Lieutenant,” Ju said stepping forward and placing her hands gently on Mara’s arm. “I was hoping to speak with you after the meeting, you can’t dodge me like this.” She teased with a smile on her face hoping that Mara would stay calm. She tugged very slightly on the woman’s arm. “I’m over here.” She whispered giving a nod in the direction where Miles still stood and she planned to return to.
