Jaein regretted his earlier thoughts. Just as he entertained the thought of being amused at the way the meeting was going, the chief of security stood up. “Yeah. Welcome,” she said. “Wish it was under better circumstances.” She started walking to the door, and he couldn't help but notice that she left the medal on the table as she went.
Jaein couldn't help but be a little perplexed. He knew that this crew was fiercely loyal; his encounters with them so far had been enough to make him realize that. But Givens, despite taking over for the old captain, hadn't been part of that. Everything he'd seen from her so far was that she was as in the dark as everyone else, and that she was just trying to make the best of the situation that she could. Granted, he'd had at least one more meeting with her than everyone else had, but he still wasn't prepared for just how angry everyone seemed to be.
There's always changes that happen in the service, he thought. For this crew to have stayed together so long is a rarity they should be glad about having happened, not mad that it's ended.
He just sighed as Coleman confronted the woman at the doorway, ordering her to return to her seat. For half a second, it looked like she was going to deck him anyway, and Jaein watched to see what he needed to do. Fortunately, that half-second passed, and she backed down, realizing what she was about to do. Ensign Han chose that moment to approach and attempt to defuse the situation, trying to get her to come and speak to her. He saw the security officer shrug her off brusquely, but then return to her seat. She was breathing slowly, very controlled, the marks of someone trying their best to keep themselves reined in. Jaein made a note to keep an eye out whenever she was around.
Givens called the meeting back to order with a choice - either call it now and meet back here extremely early in the morning to do the actual mission brief, or do the mission brief now as originally planned. He considered saying something, but the junior science officer spoke first: “Both barrels would be appreciated. You’ve got my undivided attention. Can process later in the Officers Lounge. If I’m not speaking out of turn.”
Jaein fought down a chuckle, but just nodded and straightened his padd, ready to make whatever notes he needed.
==Waiting on you, Captain==
