And the hits just keep on coming, Jaein thought.
The briefing had been carrying on fairly normally. They were being sent to a nebula on the border, one he was familiar with from back in the Dominion War but had honestly forgotten about, to search for smugglers. Left unsaid was the fact that if smugglers were going through, then it was quite possible that Cardassians, either spies or more serious armed forces, were there as well. He wasn't exactly sanguine about it, but it was definitely something that needed doing.
For a moment, he was glad of the assignment. Barring a catastrophic discovery, it would give him some time to work with his engineers and get a grip on what exactly he'd walked into. Maybe I can do some damage control drills, he thought, or we can do some cross-training. He made some notes in his padd, nodding as they reached the end of the briefing itself.
His thoughts were interrupted, however, when the door opened. He turned to look and saw the diminutive quartermaster, followed by a red-headed woman in rumpled, travel-worn civilian clothes. He recognized her, but couldn't place her until Givens spoke up and called her captain. Crawford, he filled in, placing her face with his studies of the Artemis' record. He wondered what she was doing here, though most of the old guard seemed quite happy to see her.
To see her, yes, but it appeared not everyone was remotely happy. “Can someone please start explainin’ what’s goin’ on here?" the chief of security exploded. "And no more of this 4D chess bullshit. I saw the look on your face when Tyra came back in here. You were just as surprised as we were. What are you? Some kinda plant, just playin’ at bein’ a CO so some arsehole with square pips can get his rocks off?”
Jaein couldn't help but cover his face in his hands. He'd seen some overblown reactions before, but this was particularly over-the-top. Prophets, but he'd met some Zaldans who were more diplomatic than she was, and the Zaldans didn't even have a word for diplomacy; it was just another particularly codified form of lying to them.
But Jaein sighed and leaned back in his chair, trying to stay on the bright side. At least this was proving to be the most entertaining briefing he'd ever been part of. "I almost wish I had some candy," he said under his breath, making sure that only someone right next to him, such as Han, could have heard him, and staying out of the security chief's line of fire.
