Everything had changed, the room was so emotionally charged at this point all the Half-Betazoid could do was sit back and let the emotions brush over her brain trying to ignore them. Anger, shock, intrigue, some entitlement, and more. The whole quilt of emotions was thick and heady. Ju was glad that her Halmoni had put her and her brothers through classes and trainings with people of their own kind so they could learn to harness and feel the emotions without them being overwhelming. Ju remembered when she was young school would be hard for her especially when someone was feeling an emotion particularly strongly. This training had helped her and her brothers be more successful in life but the class had been more than just about control it had also been about Betazed heritage and more. All three Han children had mostly just delved into being Korean and human because it was easier that way being surrounded and inundated with it all the time. It wasn’t that she hated or disliked the other side of her being it just never felt that important.
Ju had only seen her actual parents a grand total of three times in her life and one of those times she couldn’t remember because it was when they dropped her off to her brothers and Halmoni when she was just a baby. Her parents had been busy being Starfleet officers in deep space and there were many times Ju and her brothers wondered why bother even having children if you weren’t around to experience them. Halmoni had raised her own children and then her grandchildren before she had passed away. The kind hearted but stern Korean woman was someone that they accidentally called Oma too often and that earned them a quick slap to the shoulder, but inwardly, they knew she understood why it slipped.
While all the sparks, fireworks, floodworks, etc were going around her in a maelstrom, Ju was peacefully thinking about her past and waiting for them to either decide which Captain they were going to actually follow and what mission they were going to end up doing. Is every Starfleet mission just a clusterf*ck? Ju wasn’t the cursing sort, but her experience with briefings, missions, and Starfleet in general was really declining. The pomp and circumstance they sold the newbies at Academy had disappeared like it was written in invisible ink the moment you got the pin on your collar for graduation. I need to ask Dame if this is how it goes… or if this is unusual. Because, I need to know if the danger of whiplash and utter stupidity is the norm…
Through Hurricane Artemis, came a voice of calm and reason. The man sitting next to her, the current acting Chief of Engineering, mentioning that he wished he had candy. For a moment, the hairs on the back of Ju’s neck stood up because she wasn’t quite sure she had heard him correctly. The only person on the ship thus far that understood the depths of Ju’s sweet tooth was Damian. After being admonished harshly on the Philly for her bad habit she was a little gun shy when it came to this situation. Ju reached up and rubbed the lobe of her ear warring with herself if she should expose herself or if she should keep her candy horde to herself.
If he was serious, she wondered what candy did he like. She didn’t carry chocolate in her pocket because nothing was worse than having half your chocolate stuck to the wrapper and more than that.. being caught licking the wrapper was embarrassing, she knew this first hand. She did have a few different other options though. Because she had come from her Quarters she had a full inventory at the moment. Small lollipops, some Jolly Ranchers, some Starburst, Taffy (the ones with jokes of course), and she had some her favorite cinnamon candy. So the question was, what was the best treat for the new Chief. They were in a large room filled with people who may or may not be open to people chewing on candy while at a briefing that was slowly becoming a battleground. So a lollipop was out. Taffy was hard to chew so it would be noisy, so that was out. Starburst were great but there was a lot of chewing involved there too. Going though the various ideas in her head Ju decided that they could both use a Jolly Rancher.
Ju shifted in her seat, sliding her hand in her pocket. Finding two of the rectangular candies she pulled them out. Warm but not even remotely melted, she slid her hand over towards the Chief and opened her hand beneath the table. “Take one if you want.” She whispered to him and her dark eyes made eye contact with his and gave him a smile.
