==My hero!==
Jaein continued to watch the fireworks popping off, but remained silent. This wasn't his fight, these weren't his people as of yet. As much as he might be tempted to try and intervene, as of this instant he wasn't welcome, and he knew it.
Unfortunately for Givens, as much as that was true for her as well, she had no choice but to intervene, because it was her job. She was the captain - for the moment, at least; the presence of Crawford cast doubt on that, particularly with the almost palpable relief that the old-timers on the crew displayed - and so Givens had to step in. The words were scathing, and at another time, another context, they would have been devastating.
Calleja, however, wasn't cowed by them. He saw her eyes locking on the redheaded captain, and wilt like a jumja tree at the height of summer at her soft words. Regardless, it did get her to sit back down, though she also managed to make that dramatic.
He started to turn back to the head of the table when he got distracted by a hand under the table. He looked down and saw the young Ensign Han reveal a pair of candies. “Take one if you want,” she whispered with a smile.
He gave a smile back and took one, a reddish hard candy he hadn't seen before. He opened it and popped it in his mouth before quietly disposing of the wrapper in a pocket. "Thank you," he said just as quietly, and resumed an attentive air as he waited for whatever happened next. Hopefully some more information about the mission, he thought, remembering that he still had another meeting after this and still hadn't had dinner, though the sweetness of the candy was welcome.
