Sat at the back of the table, Mara was grateful for Tyra's discretion. The Security chief had been expecting to get unceremoniously kicked out of the briefing and once she'd calmed down, she liked to think she would have understood and accepted the reasoning.
I'm only here ‘cause there's no time to find someone else in Security to replace me. And that ain't a great look.
Mara had seen Beka and the popcorn, and at some point the doctor was going to pay dearly for that poorly timed cheap shot. But otherwise, the Bandaran’s expression didn't flicker, even if she was massively relieved to hear that Crawford was back in command.
It's still gonna be awkward between me an’ Givens. Whatever happens, just gotta hope she and I are on different teams to keep the peace.
As the briefing started again, Calleja ignoring the jibe about 3rd time lucky, she was oddly content about this being a principally a scientific mission. Putting the focus onto other departments would hopefully give her the chance to start organising Security her way without the spotlight that came with being on the front line.
That's the theory. In practice… We probably still get in a fight ‘cause it's us and the universe likes a good laugh at our expense.
Several parts of the briefing stuck out to Mara. As of yet they hadn't identified Cardassians crossing the nebula, but there were apparently ships using it. There had also been some scans done in the past, so maybe they had identified some potential problem areas already.
“To recap: patrol, survey and deploy. Those are our objectives. Any questions, comments or concerns about the mission specifically?”
Aeryn was first to speak, reaching out to the new engineer, and once the CSO had finished, Mara took her turn.
“I got a couple of questions,” she said, dark eyes flicking between the Captains, trying her best to keep her voice even. Her accent was still noticeably thicker than usual, a telling sign that she wasn't as calm as she looked, but she was trying to stay focused on the job at hand.
“You mentioned we've not identified Cardassian ships in this nebula yet. How recently were the last smugglers detected? Do we know what routes they were usin’, an’ whether we're talkin’ ‘bout a few knackered old shuttles or Orion level firepower? An’ how good are the scans already taken? Do they give us any information on known blind spots, so maybe Engineerin’ an’ Science can start workin’ to counter them whilst we're travellin’?”
Mara wanted to know how to approach the security operation whilst Artemis was in the nebula. If Orion cartels were using it to operate, then that could potentially necessitate a large scale deployment to capture bigger vessels and repel large scale boarding actions if they were attacked. But if it was mostly smaller vessels then that would mean a focus on smaller teams.
Her question on the previous scans was more to get an idea on how long ago previous survey attempts had been. Federation technology advanced quickly so maybe gases and radiation that blocked previous sweeps wouldn't stop Artemis. Equally, if those scans had identified parts of the nebula that would still be problematic, then the crew had a chance to try and find a way around that as they went.
