Watching Ju, it brought a grin to Damian’s face to see that despite the raging sea of tension in the room, there was still some normalcy to be had. It almost seemed like Ju and Jaein were conspiring about something together. Though it was how Ju moved and then offered something surreptitiously under the table to Omdor that painted the real picture. It didn’t take long for the interim Chief to find something he liked from the likely assortment of sweets that Ju always carried, and popped into his mouth.
That wasn’t the only thing happening in the room though. There was plenty going on, and he could just imagine how a producer of a reality show might try and film it all. Of course, the PADDs were out in full force, as Coleman also saw Beka using hers, likely having a conversation with someone considering the delays in her typing. He wasn’t exactly sure who she might be conversing with, but the elephant in the room was the likely subject he guessed. Beka and Mara were an interesting duo, though it often was the case that Beka knew more than she should about a myriad of subjects, and people. However, the present situation was well within her wheelhouse.
As the briefing continued Damian was half-listening, having already gone through it with Cass, and instead continued to survey the room. Reactions to the information being presented was what he was mostly looking for. Aeryn seemed to be paying the most attention, which was a good thing. The mission leaned heavily on her and Omdor’s departments. Once more, she’d be thrown into the deep end, though Coleman was confident she’d be up for the task. In the recent weeks since she’d moved over to science, he’d seen her much happier in general. Not because Aeryn detested her previous role, but because she seemed excited to explore interests that had been somewhat dormant.
Hmmmm. I wonder if I shouldn’t help science and engineering with the buoys? I haven’t really done much engineering since the Apgar. I’ve been so focused on security and command. Though, I don’t know if Omdor would appreciate that. Being an interim Chief, he might think I’m evaluating him. Or, the rest of engineering might see it as me stepping in for Ju. Even though that is far from the case.
Sighing quietly to himself, Damian decided against that course of action. There’d be another time where he might be able to indulge himself in areas that intrigued him but rarely got to do. Plus, he also had a duty to Tyra too. Whatever she’d been through, it had seemed that she’d been through the wringer. Then her welcome back to the ship had been less than perfect too, with all the drama in the briefing. Still, it relieved him to know that she was back in the big seat. While he would have worked with Givens, it would have been out of a sense of duty and not out of a well established bond like he had with Crawford. Plus with Cass, there would have always been an underlying amount of resentment. Everything now made sense though. The Admiral who had restored Tyra to her rightful place as CO of the Artemis had done Damian a kindness in a weird way; not making Damian an Acting Captain before pulling the rug out from under him.
" No questions, but if it's agreeable with you, Commander Omdor, I'd like for us to get together as soon as the ship departs, so we can start working on the new probes.”
Coleman appreciated Lieutenant Commander Miller’s response, quickly building the bridge that was going to be needed for the mission. That was one of Aeryn’s greatest strengths, and it made him glad to see it being put to use so quickly. It was also a pleasant realization that at least one of his and Tyra’s decisions, at Aeryn’s request, had been a good choice.
“I got a couple of questions…”
Reacting to the voice, Damian’s gaze immediately darted to the chestnut haired security chief. Already Coleman was girding himself for yet another potential outburst, or something that was soaked in venomous subtext. If there was supposed to be something behind the questions beyond Mara’s obvious previous vexations though, Damian was hard pressed to find it. The questions were standard fare, even if he felt that some were technically answered by the briefing itself. Still, clarifying never hurt, especially when it came to mission prepping.
“The last scans of the nebula were taken within the last few weeks by a passing patrol. To that end, no ships were detected directly, but there was evidence of eroded warp trails in the area.”
Coleman punched in a couple of commands into the terminal built into the desk, and the image of the nebula was updated with the most recent scan information. In all reality, it didn’t really clarify much compared to what was already shown.
“Most of the smugglers that were caught operated freighters only. So no real weapon systems to speak of. Though that’s only the ones the anti-smuggling taskforce actually managed to find; they are slow, clumsy, and stand out on sensors. That is why we are being sent, because we have the firepower to deal with the larger threats, should there be any. ”
Putting in another couple of commands into the terminal shifted the nebula perspective to the stellar cartography of the area; these maps highlighted the many gaps that the nebula hid from prying eyes.
“We are also being sent because previous scans of the nebula have not painted a clearer picture. There was a partial survey completed quite a long while ago, and it was partial because the interference within the nebula prevented it from being properly completed. With the new experimental sensor buoys, combined with our state-of-the-art sensor suite, we should be able to do a much better job of getting a clearer picture. And, also, ongoing surveillance of any smuggling or potential incursions from the Cardassians.”
