Jaein was glad to have Captain Givens resume the briefing, as everyone else began to pay attention once more. She did start off by officially passing the captaincy back to Captain Crawford, but as the redhead didn’t seem to have any of the materials – and apparently seeming distracted still, a situation he couldn’t blame her for – Givens continued the briefing as a mission advisor.
“Artemis has been tasked with a dual-purpose assignment,” she continued, “of both patrolling the area as a deterrent but also surveying the nebula. The hope is that we will be able to effectively map it in ways that we have not been able to before. Artemis has both the firepower to defend itself if needed, but also the robust sensor suite needed for mapping.” She flicked a finger across her padd, and the map of the Hugora Nebula disappeared to be replaced with a technical schematic.
“This is the schematic for an experimental sensor buoy that Science HQ would like deployed in the nebula as a test,” she said, and Jaein started analyzing the structure as she continued talking. “Unfortunately,” she said, “the do not come pre-assembled, though we have been stocked with a surplus of the needed probes.”
Of course, he thought, they didn’t say we’ve got plenty of the rest of the parts. He made a note to request the quartermaster do a count of the needed supplies as soon as he could get the list – preferably before his next meeting ended.
While he was making his note, Captain Crawford was seemingly back in the room, looking up around the room. “Lieutenant Miller and Commander…” She was looking right at him, but obviously had no idea who he was beyond rank and department.
“Commander Omdor, your acting Chief,” Givens offered helpfully with a nod. He returned it with a brief grin before attending to Crawford again.
“Right… Commander Omdor.” She seemed almost hurt, as if his being here was a blow. He made another note to seek her out as soon as possible, though that could wait until after launch. “Well then, Miller and Omdor, your departments get to make sense of this schematic and get the prototypes up and running prior to testing them in the Nebula.” She finished by wanting them tied in to Artemis’ sensors – not likely an issue, but a worthwhile order – but her tone was flatter than a Vulcan’s as she gave the order, and then asked for questions.
Miller spoke up first. “No questions,” she said, “but if it’s agreeable with you, Commander Omdor, I’d like for us to get together as soon as the ship departs, so we can start working on the new probes.”
“Not a problem on my end,” he told her quickly. “If I can’t be there personally – I’ve been in this job for less time than Captain Givens was CO, after all – I’ll make sure we’ve got someone available.” He looked briefly at Han before looking between the two captains. “If I can get the schematics ASAP, hopefully we can be ready for them by then.”
He’d been finished for approximately half a second before the Chief of Security spoke up, asking a short half-dozen questions, which Commander Coleman deftly answered. The gist was mostly immaterial to him: the nebula was a soupy mess, as they already knew, and there wasn’t much information to go on other than what they already had.
The other scientist then spoke up, suggesting a drinking game as an icebreaker before the mission started. “I can’t speak for everyone,” he said, “but I’ve got another meeting after this one with my shift leads that I still haven’t met, plus dinner with my wife, and I still don’t know where my quarters are. I won’t be able to make it.”
