Mara’s face remained impassive as Devereaux lived up to her word and made a highly inadvisable suggestion. If ever there was a time not to deviate from the norm without good reason, it was now. The Artemis had a reputation as a ship that revolved around alcohol but to come out and say it with another Captain watching… Especially one who had said she was reviewing the crew for how they conducted themselves…
I know it’s my fuckin’ fault everythin’ in here is so tense. And she just lit the fuse. One o’ those captains is gonna go bang any minute.
The silent mental countdown in Calleja’s head got to 3 when Crawford blew. It wasn’t a volcanic eruption like Givens, but the relatively soft tone to the redhead’s voice was no less deadly.
It took a real effort for Mara not to bite at the phrase ‘petulant tantrum’. The anger blazed in her eyes for a split second before she managed to mentally snuff it out. It felt like she was being baited but she wasn’t going to let herself rise to it. Tyra was angry too, and likely frustrated and tired to go with it. It was a combustible mix, as the Security chief knew all too well and had demonstrated in the last few minutes.
A repentant Devereaux acknowledged Crawford first, but before anyone else had the chance to add anything, the briefing room door slid open with yet another surprise entrance.
Calleja’s hand flew to the holstered phaser at her hip at the sight of an armed team and she tensed, but when she realised they were Star Fleet she put both hands back on the table. A Caitian led the team of 4 and she watched as he handed a PADD to Givens before reading out a list of charges against Damian Coleman.
The Security chief wanted dearly to interpose herself between her crewmate and the intruders but she knew full well she couldn’t. She wanted to demand to view the charges herself but she couldn’t, as that paperwork had been handed to Givens and any attempt to intervene on her part could easily be seen as yet another challenge to the woman’s authority. And with Tyra in the mood she was, that was likely fatal to Mara’s position if not her place on Artemis.
Instead she quietly rose and moved to where Ju sat, dropping into a crouch at the young engineer’s side.
“You had my back, now let me have yours,” Mara said to her, resting a hand gently on the Korean’s shoulder. “We can’t intervene, and it don’t matter how much we want to. The law gonna run its course. But until he comes back, I’m gonna make sure you’re OK. I promise you that.”
As she spoke, she made eye contact with Damian and knew he could hear her. There was nothing she could do to prevent what was about to happen to him, and her pain at that realisation and that Artemis was about to lose one of the best FOs in the fleet was plain on her face as her mask slipped. But she could at least make sure Ju was looked after. And she was going to.
