To say that Crawford - he was still trying to shift his brain into thinking of her as "the captain" rather than Givens - was displeased with the young scientist's suggestion was an understatement. Her frustration with the behavior the team had shown thus far, which included the COS' initial outburst showing that someone must have informed her via text, boiled over and out at the group. Jaein simply let it wash over him, feeling the heat without letting it sink in. He knew it wasn't personal - hell, she didn't even know his name, how could it be personal to him? - but that those that had served with her previously? He could see several of them cowed by her words. The science officer offered a succinct acknowledgement and subsided, and Jaein started finalizing his notes and prepared to send a final summons for his next meeting when the door opened again.
For the briefest of moments, he wondered just what could top what they'd already had happened before he regretted thinking it into existence. A Caitian security officer walked in, almost arrogantly, and barely broke stride before coming to the head of the table and waving in his three subordinates. Then, he arrested Commander Coleman, on charges related to a murder no less.
Jaein felt his stomach drop out. He hadn't encountered Coleman much, but the few times they had met, he had struck him as a man of integrity and almost foolhardy loyalty. For him to be a party to murder and a cover-up... he almost couldn't believe it.
As the COS moved around the table, Jaein tensed, afraid of what it might mean, but she came to stand next to Han, and spoke softly to the young ensign. He relaxed, glad that she hadn't done anything else stupid at this point, but there was still time for it to happen.
Unconsciously, he tried to edge a little bit down the table to make room for the COS, as well as to distance himself from the security officers in case something happened. He needed room to operate if it came to it, but he also simply didn't want to get involved unless he absolutely needed to. A quick look around the table showed confused and shocked faces; clearly, no one else had seen it coming, either.
