There were certain things that someone in Cass' position came to expect with the same certainty that one placed in the laws of nature. The first was that her presence would almost never be welcomed. The second was that her presence would stir up drama befitting a soap opera. The third was that there was little she could do to mitigate either of the first two, much less placate the stronger personalities. However, today, the second certainty was overachieving at a level that even she couldn't have predicted.
Despite trying to keep tabs on all of the reactions occurring around her, her dark eyes stayed on the feline, even as he offered a less than satisfying apology.
"I was assured by those issuing the warrant that all protocol was being followed and I merely needed to come and make the arrest. Perhaps I should have questioned this, given those authorities were on Earth, but they seemed to be in some haste and brooked no debate."
Cass expected an eruption of massive proportions to come from her left. She knew the stories and legends; if Jeremy Crawford was known for his calculating iciness, his progeny was know for her flaring temper and her eviscerating tongue. And yet, the expected evisceration never came, not even when the Caitain pointed out where to file complaints as if that would fix anything.
"If you have any further issues, the padd you received contains the contact information for the prosecutor leading this case; I suggest you contact them. I'll let you resume your meeting."
"That's so very gracious of you," Cass remarked dryly, her own gaze suggesting her disdain for the cat and his handler might have been at an ultimate high. And a glance at Crawford did nothing to ease that feeling.
However, what she did know was that someone needed to do damage control and someone needed to bring things back to order and that someone did not look like it was going to be Crawford. While the redhead looked like she'd pulled herself back from the brink of a breakdown, she still looked shaken and distraught. Every bit of her body language screamed that this was the last place she wanted to be and despite not knowing her well, Cass felt obligated to give her that avenue of escape.
"Alright, while I can appreciate a ship living up to it's reputation for chaos and drama, I think we can all agree that this is enough for now. Everyone return to your departments and continue to prepare for launch. Any further updates will be passed along by Captain Crawford...or Lieutenant Commander Morgan," Cassandra ordered once the Caitain had left.
Her glance at Crawford had caused the addition of Morgan to the mix, understanding that Crawford might not be able to issue orders until she got her head back on straight and no one would appreciate the appearance that Cassandra was taking advantage of the lapse.
"And if I hear that anyone is impeding the Lieutenant Commander and his team's exit from this vessel, you can consider your career as you know it over. Now, dismissed," she stated with a finality that suggested she wanted the room cleared immediately.
And she did; it was about the only thing she could do to protect what little control and dignity her counterpart had without marching her across the bridge to her ready room. While she might not possess Bill's ability to see across a chess board, she understood the dynamics of command and there was something to be said for allowing captains to remain larger than life to the masses.
What a mess...
