Qi tensed himself, trying not to show his frustration. Why was this a negotiation at all? Wasn’t this ship Federation property in the first place? As Lockley reached for the stasis pod, Qi chimed in one more time.
“Since 2155, more than one thousand alien-borne diseases have been introduced to the human population. Now that we’ve boarded the ship, your crew will be exposed to pathogens that they have to way of fighting off. For example, Bendii syndrome can kill within hours if left untreated. If you wake up any member of the crew without medical supervision, you will be putting their life at risk. It is your decision, captain.”
Like any good lie, there was plenty of truth to it. Humans had encountered a great deal of diseases as a result of contact with aliens. Qi hoped that he could also leverage the captain’s pre-existing anxieties in that regard. Of course, Qi had no idea what Bendii syndrome was, but neither would Lockley.
Qi didn’t look at his crewmates. He would find out later if he had overstepped. He felt confident that Captain Adaran would have appreciated a light stretch of the truth, in service of the greater good.
