Qi followed Braggins onto the Bridge, marching straight to his station. The failing atmosphere aboard the Lord Franklin had left his brain foggy. He gripped the sides of his console to focus. Then, he heard something that forced him to attention: the Cardassians were on their way, and the captain was prepared to scuttle the Lord Franklin in order to secure their escape.
“The Franklin is a piece of history! We can’t just crack it open like a bad soufflé. Don’t get me wrong: I’ll do it myself if the alternative is war, but let’s explore our options.”
Qi racked his brain, searching for something, anything that he could try.
“If the Cardassians are keeping something secret out here, then we have some leverage that we can use. If we redirect our probe to fly toward Federation HQ, they won’t attack until they find out what we know and who we told. We can send an encoded information packet to it, just to get their attention. I have a collection of Klingon love poems that are probably a convincing size.
"There’s plenty of salvaged Federation material along the border, so they might even be paranoid enough to think that we have backup ships hiding in Talarian space.”
They didn’t have much to work with, but details were everything in constructing a bluff. The audience had to think they were seeing behind the curtain, but the real performance was taking place backstage.
