Alex looked down at the floor for a second, then looked back up and bagan, "We received a distress signal from a small Cardassian ship. It appeared to be Scout Class of some kind. When we arrived, it looked almost as if it had run into a large asteroid, but scans indicated that it had only been close to the asteroid when some sort of explosion had damaged the ship, leaving some evidence and debris on it. There was a device inside the ship that was in their torpedo bay that appeared to have had some sort of safety device fail. As it built up an energy field of some kind, and discharged, it tore the ship up even worse."
Cindy added, "We managed to save the rest of their crew and recover most of the dead and beam back to the ship. When we returned to investigate further, we went to what appeared to be the source." She waved her hand and a holographic representation of the energy signature appeared. "We couldn't identify the signature that we recorded, nor could we properly identify the device. Some of the components were familiar, but between Science and Engineering, we couldn't repair the device in time to stop another detonation. The energy made it very difficult to beam out of the area, so in close proximity, it interferes with communications and at least some bands we use for scanning for transporter locks."
Alex picked up again, "The last detonation destroyed what was left of the ship, but it had no external power source, it was cut off from all other ship systems and there was barely anything left of the ship anyway. Sadly, that's it in a nutshell. There are a few minor details available in the scan results, but even given my experience, I'm not able to gain much from them."
Another wave of a hand from Cindy and they appeared surrounded by floating display screens that each were scrolling with data from various scan sources.
