The Hugora Nebula was an impressive sight. The only drawback was whose territory it bordered on. Lucy zoned out watching the general sensor reports and attempting to take in the back and forth that was going on. Aeryn and Ju had done a brilliant job reworking the probes to meet the requirements of the mission. The worst bit was you had a limited amount of space in a general probe casing and balancing that space with what you needed required a lot of thought.
The adjustments did mean that the Artemis would need to enter the nebula to deploy the probes. That was a reasonable requirement. Boosting the power to the sensors was good, but the flow of a nebula could be risky. Lucy remembered the EPS conduits on Deck 16. Engineering should hopefully have it under observation, hopefully.
Lucy had thought about suggesting the use of the tractor beam for positioning the probes, but she wasn’t certain of the range of the beam, especially inside the nebula. She kind of understood the FO’s frustration, but a nebula needed to be balanced. Preparations had been made, they’d be ready enough.
As the Artemis moved into position to launch the first probe Lucy decided to run a sweep of the nebula to try and get a feel for what was going on. Somebody had compared a nebula to a pond or lake. There was a lot going on, but you couldn’t see everything that was in there. The way light refracted was one thing and sometimes you didn’t want to see everything that was down there.
Nebulae were slightly different and not as icky. The things that dwelled in the deep of Earth’s oceans could be strange and exceptionally unusual. Interstellar fauna were a curiosity. Lifeforms could exists in many places and the definition of a lifeform was wide and varied. Also there had been discoveries that weren’t carbon based.
