As Miles gave his update, the doors to the Turbolift opened once more, this time spilling out the newest Midshipman from his own Department. He looked over to the younger woman expectantly as she did what most would do in the situation and assess the Bridge. Miles considered such action a good habit, as it allowed a person to be more aware and observational. He felt she started off on the right foot...
Until she chuckled. He could tell by the inflection of the chuckle it was probably one bred of nervousness, but it could still reflect badly on the young Midshipman, especially when it was done in front of so many Senior Officers, to include the Captain and First Officer. She seemed to bounce back quickly as she reported in to Miles.
"Welcome to the Bridge, Midshipman," Miles responded. "Go ahead and take the Helm." She followed the order to take her place at the Helm as Commander Jolaan gave the order to move to the first drop-off point. Miles hummed approvingly to himself as Maxas-Darl gave the affirmative with a certain tone of confidence. Not enough that Miles might consider that she had already gotten cocky, but there was a reason he had assigned her to the Helm at this point.
As a Midshipman, there were very few opportunities for newly minted Officers or Enlisted to find themselves with Bridge Duty, let alone on Alpha Shift. But Miles had read his new Midshipman's file. It was impressive, to say the least. Aside from that, he felt getting the opportunity to have at least one shift early into a new Officer's career would help long-term, as it would ensure they were prepared as they made their way up the ranks. Miles was assessing how well she performed now, so he could assist in her development...and whether or not she would see the Bridge again.
His primary focus was the readouts and ongoing scans, but he made sure to keep an eye on other things, namely her performance, as he notated things in his log for their discussion after shift. As this occurred, the response from Commander Miller rang through the Bridge that they were preparing the first probe for transport. They were moving along nicely now.
