Holodeck simulations were incredible tools and Midshipman Maxas-Darl had been ever keen to take advantage when the opportunity presented itself. Over time Hallowette had practiced flying everything from venerable hulls like the Excelsior and Miranda, to modern ships like the Gagarin and the Sutherland.Time and again, hour upon hour she would settle in and just fly the ships, noting every unique rumble, tremor and sigh the simulations would give her.
Still, simulations were dim candles compared with reality, and having extensively flown Peregrine's, Shuttlecraft and Runabouts as a member of the Academy flight team, Hallowette vastly preferred the real thing.
Her first time in control of the Artemis was an experience all of its own.
Ok, work with me girl.
The Vesta class vessel was powerful, responsive and remarkably agile given her size. Hally manipulated the coordinates deftly, her nervous energy dissipating as she maneuvered the ship along the coordinate vector and accelerated towards full impulse. Her time on the flight team had offered slightly more experience navigating celestial hazards than typical green helmsman, and as fate would have it, she had flown from Bajor to Cardassia a few times as a teen, so Hallowette was somewhat familiar with some of the more esoteric peculiarities of the sector. Though she had never spent any time near this particular nebula (her father's experience with the Maquis after the end of the occupation meant he had strictly forbade her from navigating in the multitude of sketchy areas along the border) she was certain to be aware of some of the issues she had encountered in the past.
Adjusting for common solar drift and occasional ionic rifting allowed her to maintain .94 Impulse, a number she felt quite accomplished at maintaining. A number of times she fought the urge to turn around to see how the Captain, First Officer and Lt. Grant were appraising her performance, but the longer she flew the more her anxiety fell away. Before too long the console reported their destination was approaching and Hally backed the ship down and settled it into position.
The curly auburn haired jr officer lifted her head as the ship came to a stop and the engines powered down. She peered out the viewscreen and held in a smile as she said her first words to her legendary commanding officer.
"Artemis has arrived at Drop Off One and is in position as ordered Captain."
==Tag Grant and Tyra, all else!==
