==A few days before present==
Aviation Support Officer, Hangar Bay 2
Personal Log
Stardate 202411.25
Finally after several weeks I'm finally starting to feel like I'm finding some semblance of routine.
The hours are long, and CPO Garrett is strict, but I have already learned more about hangar deck operations than I ever did at the Academy. While I'm doing very little piloting, the last couple of days I've run 'the show', with Garrett's supervision, and he seems pleased, or at least I think he is. He's not really one to give accolades, but he's also not staring phasers into my pagh like he did at first. I think he respects that I'm dedicated to putting in the same time that he does, especially considering he knows this duty isn't what I really want to be doing. I'd much rather be flying, or even working on the communications deck, but this is important work too - especially early on in a mission. I'll get my shot eventually, especially if I do well here. I'm a little fish on the Artemis, but if Hangar Bay 2 is where I'm going to be, then I'm going to work to make sure it's the best it can be.
Speaking of other duties, I've begun to study up on Vesta Class ship operations. While flying is near and dear to my heart, I really think I like running Operations more than I expected I would. I minored in starship operations in the Academy, more because I was close enough in credit hours to cross it off the list than true interest, but I kind of like the puzzle of it all. I know running a Hangar Deck is a far cry from running a full Starship, but still - it's really fulfilling to see it all come together. I really like it.
I've also been spending time familiarizing myself with the Vesta Helm layout. I don't anticipate I'll have a real chance to helm the Artemis before I make Ensign, if even then. Still, I want to be ready just in case. Lieutenant Grant seems like a fair man, but I get the sense he's not someone who takes risks lightly. I've heard that Lieutenant Harriman is one of the best pilots in Starfleet, so the Artemis is already in great hands. I pulled her console layout and it is impressively advanced. I took a few queues from her and it's improved my simulation response times by almost 12%. I really hope I get a chance to learn from her, it's pilots like her that really set the bar for those like myself who truly want to be among the best.
Lastly, I figured given the history of the ship that the Artemis might get a reprieve from Cardassian affairs, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I had no idea that things between Cardassia and the UFP were so strained. My father must have had his hands full over the time I've been away at the Academy. He's said very little about it, but being an old Security man I suppose that isn't surprising. Still, I had thought the new Cardassian Civilian Government had much more positive overtures towards other species, and more of a handle on the Military. Guess things are more complex than I knew.
In any case, I'm on hour 14 and I'm due back on duty in a few hours. Inventory tomorrow!
