Kalli seemed very interested as Carley spoke about being very familiar with the drones and replied, "I had never given them any thought until I met Commander Talion. That was back on my first assignment, the Copernicus. He was only a Lieutenant Commander at the time. After that, I saw drones in an entirely different light. It taught me not to walk too close to an ethically confusing minefield though. My program is strictly designed as an effective tool that works through the drones." She shook head heads slowly, "I don't agree with confusing people on that issue."
Hearing that Carley felt emotional issues about the mission, her brow wrinkled a bit as she tried to understand what her crewmate meant. Kalli tried to find words that might not be offending, "Well, I suppose I can understand how the situation might be emotionally charged. I hadn't really thought of it that way, but we DID come within only a few seconds of being killed."
When Carley asked if looking at the stars inspired her to imagine home, Kalli froze for a second and her face went blank. Carley was not likely to know, so Kalli didn't fault her for that. There was barely any mention of it in her files, even for those who tended to read such records. Kalli took a deep breath and decided she would try to honestly answer, "Um...no, I...um...I try not to think about that place...I don't have a home anymore. I mean, the planet is still there, but where the colony was is now little more than a crater. So..."
Wanting to quickly divert from the subject, she then continued, "What I do think of is what it looks like to me." She gestured around her, "THIS is where my home is now. Being in space. I tend to regret being on a station and no matter how much I like being on a planet, it never seems to end well, so I have come to think of it as a kind of personal curse. So, to me, all I really have is...the Black Velvet..." A hint of a grin tried to find its way back onto her face as she shrugged, "It comes from an old song, but the idea always stuck in my head." SHe paused and looked out at the stars, "You try to look at it, but you're not really looking AT anything. You're looking at the vastness of nothing that surrounds everything else out there, and all those little tiny specks are entire worlds and other galaxies...without end..."
Finally turning to look at Carley again, she asked, "Where's home for you?"
While waiting for the answer, Kalli picked up her mug again and took a sip of the hot, dark and spiced liquid.
