Kat seemed like a nice enough person and didn’t mind that Ju was going to be working with her. It would be nice to expand her world a little bit while she was here and she knew it would also help in making a name for herself rather than just being known as the First Officer’s girlfriend. Though she missed Damian severely, there was nothing she could do about him absence except wait for news. She wasn’t even certain they were at the point where she would get any news. He would likely keep Captain Crawford informed before herself and that was also fine because she was the important one since she was the boss.
“Nice to meet you, Kat.” Ju offered the petty officer a warm smile. “Yeah I saw the report and figured it would be nice to get my hands busy. I agree about diagnostics at some point all the reports just run together and I can’t remember if I read them right or not!”
Ju was ready for just about anything she was just eager to get busy. When Kat asked if she was ready to head to cargo bay three Ju gave a quick nod. “Lead the way,” Except the pair had only taken a few steps when everything began to flash yellow and Ju looked up knowing that this meant a yellow alert had been called across the ship. Ju looked over at Kat wondering what was going on, though she doubted the officer would have any idea either as they had both been about to head out.
Lieutenant Anderson’s voice rang out stating that everyone was on stand by and small repair duties would be postponed for the time being. Ju felt her stomach sink because she had really been looking forward to getting out of here and doing something else. Working so hard on the probes with Aeryn had been exactly what she needed. Without that to keep her brain and hands busy Ju knew that her thoughts would stray and her anxiety would ramp up.
Forcing herself to stay calm, Ju looked over at Whitby. “Guess we’ll have to take a raincheck on our date,” she teased the woman giving a bit of a sigh.
They didn’t have any information yet on what was causing the yellow alert but whatever it was she hoped it would pass quickly so they could get back to normal working status. Ju gave Kat a soft smile and headed back to her station tucking her Engineering kit back in it’s location so she could find it if they needed it again. All she could do was wait for word on what was going on. Ju sometimes envied the people who were assigned Bridge duty because they were in the thick of the action and actually knew what was going on, well at least up there they did. She supposed in a ship this large if something happened in Engineering then the Bridge would only get the condensed version of events and not what chaos was actually taking place.
Still, she hoped that one day she would be assigned Bridge duty. As an ensign she knew that was not going to be any time soon and that was okay. The Chief or someone way more qualified than her was likely up there doing the job that needed to be done and Ju was fine waiting in the wings for when she would be needed. She also hoped that one day she would be part of an away team. Having been kicked off the last one had been pretty hard for her to swallow and she hoped that if she was every allowed to do that again she wouldn’t stick her foot in her mouth this time.
I just need to grow up and keep proving myself…
