“We’re going to stumble, make mistakes, I’m sure, more than a few before we find our footing. But we’re going to learn from those mistakes. That’s what being human is all about.”
-Jonathan Archer, Principles of Command and Ethics, Starfleet Academy Archive 1204
"Under normal circumstances, Midshipman Maxas-Darl's plot course would be correct," Grant said gently. "However, given the nebula's interference to our systems, we won't be able to navigate quite as cleanly."
Midshipman Maxas-Darl's moment of satisfaction was short lived as Grant addressed the Captain. Her face immediately went white and a rush of disbelief and disappointment erupted from the pit of her torso.
What? No, I know this is right... Her eyes searched the course, calculating and recalculating all the variables as quickly as she could.
And there it was. *Her mistake*. Grant was absolutely right, and her mistake wasn't even one born of difficulty. The interference rather blatant, something most any proficient Starfleet Helmsman would see fairly quickly. But Hally hadn't - She knew the nebula was problematic - that was the entire reason for this mission, yet she had let her overconfidence and worse, her need to excel (and be SEEN excelling) blind her to the obvious.
"I uhm..." she managed to mutter before Grant lowered his voice and spoke directly and softly to her, " "You're learning. You'll make fumbles. The best thing is to pick up the ball and push forward. Don't let it affect you in the now. You're doing good. We'll talk more later."
Hally didn't know what to say. Lt. Grant had to have known that her mistake was not born of inexperience. He had to know that she simply messed up.
Yet he had been positive, and gentle, and reassuring. Hally was incredibly relieved by the grace and leadership her supervisor had shown her.
"I'm sorr..." she began before wiping away the urge to appear sheepish, and bringing her bright teal eyes to meet his, "You are right, thank you Sir."
As Grant returned to his seat, Hallowette turned in her seat and addressed the Captain and First Officer. "I see my mistake Captain. My apologies." She did her best to retain professional bearing, but also admit to the blunder. "I'll endeavor to minimize any further."
The young Officer turned back to her console as Archer's quote drifted through her head. Grant had given her a reprieve, and as he said, it was up to her to push forward and not let it undermine her duty.
As Grant and the Captain spoke of their options she replotted several approaches to their objectives, this time with the nebula's influence taken into account.
After just a moment the Captain again directed orders her way. "Plot a course to intercept, best safe speed. We want to catch them unaware before they can run but have the tractor beam ready."
"Yes Captain." Hally answered as she chose the course that best fit the request. "Best *safe* speed engaged."
