Place of Birth: San Francisco, but brought up in Lochawe village on the banks of Loch Awe, Argyll, Scotland.
Marital Status: Single
Siblings Name & Ages: Only child
Mother's Name: Marie, grandmother Moira
Father's Name: David, grandfather Ronald

Best Friend: Rosie Adair, friends from school through to present. Currently runs a pub in Edinburgh.
Personal History: Cal was born on Earth, in San Francisco, but only spent the first seven years of his life there. His mother was born and grew up there, and eventually stationed there as an instructor at Starfleet Academy, while Callan’s father served as an engineer on a starship.
Whenever his father was on Shore Leave they would spend time as a family on outings, or he would help his father tinker with various projects such as fixing up hovercars or gravcycles. He learned a lot about engineering from his father, or as much as a six year old could take in.
Just weeks after Cal’s seventh birthday his parents were tragically killed in a shuttle accident. He didn’t hear until years later that his father had been blamed for the accident as he had been the engineer working on that vehicle. Callan didn’t believe this. His father had served as engineer through the Dominion War and Borg incursion onward, had been given medals for his service, he wouldn’t have made such a mistake that caused the shuttle accident. It must have been just that, an accident. Upon his parent’s deaths, his only living relatives were his paternal grandparents, and he went to live with them in Scotland.
Life in Scotland was very different for him. His grandparents home was in a somewhat remote area, and Cal found it difficult to make new friends at school, so while he missed the hustle and bustle of life in a big city, he found he grew to enjoy the space of Scotland. His grandparents allowed him a lot of freedom and when not studying at school or from home, he roamed the surrounding countryside. The hills and lochs and mountains were his playground. His grandfather encouraged this and often took him further afield, hiking in the mountains, and at the young age of nine Cal completed reaching the summits of all 282 Munro mountains (peaks at least 3,000 metres above sea level). He still had memories of his time with his father, and kept the tinkering with gravcycles whenever the weather was too bad to go out wandering. As he got older he used the gravcycles to get him to the further mountains, leaving the vehicle at the base while he climbed to the summit, finding the gravcycle still where he’d left it when he descended.
For a career, his grandparents wanted him to become a chef and run some swanky restaurant in Edinburgh, and he underwent some of the training for this, but in his heart he knew he wanted something else. He had continued with his hiking and mountain climbing into his teens, and at 18 he went backpacking around Europe and South America with his best friend Rosie Adair. He had known her since starting school in Scotland as her family lived on the next croft to his grandparents. He loved to go to new places, to explore, and the prospect of staying in one place, running a restaurant of all things, for the rest of his life just didn’t appeal. He always wanted to reach the next peak, to explore further. He often thought about his parents' lives in Starfleet, and the places that they must have gone to and things they had seen. It was an awkward day when he had to sit down with his grandparents and tell them that he was applying to join Starfleet. He wanted to go further than backpacking around Earth, he wanted to roam the stars, he wanted to learn more about the lifestyle that his parents led, go to the places that they had gone, then go further, much further. His grandfather was against this, still blaming the allure of space exploration for losing his son in that shuttle accident. But, with some coaxing from Callan’s grandmother, he said that he wouldn’t stand in his way.
At the Academy Callan unsurprisingly found that the Engineering department was the best fit for him, following in his father’s footsteps. Rosie also joined up, but dropped out of the Academy in the second year. She returned to Scotland where her family had moved to live in Edinburgh.
Shortly before Graduation his grandmother called to say that his grandfather had died of a heart attack. He was devastated, and worried for his grandmother. How could she cope alone? Rosie kindly offered to let his grandmother move in with her in Edinburgh. Moving to the city was a big change for Callan’s grandmother but she seemed to be adapting well and keeping busy. Callen promised to visit as often as he could, but would call via subspace every week.
Having finished his studies, Callan’s excitement mounted as he awaited his first assignment in Starfleet…
== Personality ==
Academy Majors: Engineering
Academy Minors: Warp theory, holography
Hobbies & Past-Times: Likes outdoors, hiking, camping, mountaineering, sailing, cooking, reading about these subjects on other worlds
Short-Term Goals: To become a good team member on board a starship. To start exploring uncharted planets.
Long-Term Goals: To win the Charles Stark Draper Prize for Engineering
Personality: Easy going, altruistic, always eager to help
Sense of Humor: Witty observational humour
Phobias: Deep sea creatures. Along with a fear of deep water he had a phobia of the weird creatures that survive and thrive down there.
Likes: Seeing new landscapes and places
Dislikes: Card games, chess
Pet Peeves/Gripes: People not returning tools to where they got them from
Bad Habits / Vices: Snacking
Achievements: Climbed all 282 Munro mountains in Scotland by the age of 9
Disappointments: Disappointed that his best friend dropped out of the Academy so didn’t join him on a starship. They’d talked about it all the time in their first two years of study, then she dropped grades and quit.
Illnesses: Various climbing and hiking injuries e.g. broken ankle and collar bone, but no major viruses etc
Strengths: Mental endurance and psychomotor speed and accuracy skills built up through climbing.
Weaknesses: Sometimes lacks the confidence to lead a team, which he knows he will have to overcome if he’s to rise in the ranks of Starfleet.
Fears: Being deep underwater. Heights he was fine with, one could still breathe at the top of a mountain even if the air was a little thin, but deep water… but strangely he wasn’t afraid of the lack of air in space, it was the water…
Prejudices: None, and he hoped to keep it that way.
== Questions ==
Most Painful Experience: Learning of the deaths of his parents and grandfather. Losing his closest family and role models was harder than anything else he had encountered in life, bringing grief and self doubt that he could go on without them. Now he has to find a way to put a brave face on his true emotions for the sake of his grandmother, and for his career.
Best Time: Callan really enjoyed his time at Starfleet Academy, after a lot of apprehension. He had expected to hate crowds and noise compared to the Highlands he was used to, but once acclimated he really enjoyed the experience.
Most Crucial Experience: The day after learning of his grandfather’s death, he pushed himself by acting as the experienced climber helping someone reach the summit of the Inaccessible Pinnacle, second highest peak in the Skye Cuillin and rising from Sgùrr Dearg munro mountain. Considered to be the hardest Munro as it required rock-climbing and abseiling, it could only be done by a novice with the help of an experienced climber. Until that day Callan had been the novice, once he returned to the base camp he realised that he had the inner strength to not only do the climb but to help someone else achieve their ambition. He learned that he could push his limits to be strong and help others. He felt that his grandfather would be proud, and maybe if he pushed himself in Starfleet then his father might be proud as well.
Role Model: Father for serving in Starfleet and helping people, Grandfather for teaching him how to be strong and independent, yet be a good member of family and community.
